Hebrew-Parallel: Literary Translation of Genesis (14)

Hebrew-Parallel: Literary Translation of Genesis (14)

v1.4

1. Translation Policy

This translation is an artistic endeavor to reconstruct the spirit and majesty of the original Hebrew text using the dignified resonance of classical Japanese literary style. Beyond the confines of a literal translation, it aims to express the grand narrative of Genesis in a unique style through liberal translation and adaptation.

In translating, the following basic principles were strictly adhered to:

Emphasis on Concise Expression and Rhythm: Following the economy of language found in Waka and Haiku, redundant particles and decorations have been stripped away as much as possible. The conflicts of the characters and the oracles of God are brought to life as powerful rhythms.

Dignity Based on Classical Literary Style: While grounded in classical literary style, harmony with readability has been sought so that modern readers can intuitively understand the context. Vulgarity is strictly excluded, pursuing perfection as an artistic literary style.

Presentation of Strict Style and Relationships: Hiragana is replaced with Kanji as much as possible to maintain visual gravity. To express the absoluteness of God, archaic expressions of respect (such as "tamau") are used in sacred settings like divine actions or the bestowal of blessings, while maintaining a style that avoids excessive decorative honorifics, thereby clearly expressing the fundamental relationships between God the Creator and humanity, and between the patriarchs and their descendants.

[About the Production Background]

This literary translation was generated and edited through collaboration with AI, based on the creator's clear concept. While the original Bible text is in the public domain, this translation is an attempt to create a new creative expression by converting it into a unique style based on that foundation. We welcome readers to freely quote and share this for non-profit purposes such as education, research, and private use. However, please refrain from unauthorized modification or commercial use of the text.

2. Commentary

This translation is an attempt to reconstruct the human drama surrounding the inheritance of blessings and the severe intervention of God in Genesis chapters 27 and 28, within the aesthetic style of classical Japanese literature.

“The Blessing of the Firstborn (Berakhah)” (27:1-4):
The blessing that Father Isaac intended to give to Esau before his death signifies not merely the inheritance of property, but the inheritance of God's promise. The physical decline of the blind father and the weight of his spiritual mission are depicted with the serenity of literary style.

“Rebekah’s Scheme” (27:5-17):
The figure of a mother disguising her beloved son Jacob to fulfill the divine oracle, “The elder shall serve the younger.” This is captured as a bold action within the divine providence, transcending ethical right or wrong, and its tension is expressed.

“Jacob’s Disguise and Isaac’s Trembling” (27:18-33):
Jacob, disguised as Esau, deceives his father to steal the blessing. The description of Isaac “trembling violently (haradah gedolah)” upon learning of the deception symbolizes awe toward God’s definitive will, which transcends human maneuvering.

“The Ladder to Heaven (Sullam)” (28:10-15):
The vision Jacob saw while isolated in the wilderness, fleeing his brother’s wrath. The ladder connecting heaven and earth and the movement of angels indicate God’s omnipresence and promise of protection. This mystical scene is translated with visual gravity.

“Bethel (House of God)” (28:16-19):
Jacob’s confession, “How awesome is this place.” The act of consecrating the place of encounter with God, rather than just a geographical name, is emphasized within the archaic resonance.

“Jacob’s Vow” (28:20-22):
A covenant to offer a tenth in response to God’s protection. It powerfully depicts the turning point where Jacob began to face God as an individual personality.

3. Hebrew-Parallel Literary Translation
