Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of Genesis (12)
Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of Genesis (12)
v1.2
1. Translation Policy
This translation is an artistic endeavor to reconstruct the spirit and majesty of the original Hebrew text using the dignified resonance of Japan's classical literary style. By transcending the boundaries of literal translation and incorporating free translation and stylistic adaptation, the aim is to express the grand narrative of Genesis in a unique form.
In translating, the following basic principles were strictly adhered to.
Emphasis on Concise Expression and Rhythm: Following the economy of language seen in Waka and Haiku, redundant particles and decorations were stripped away as much as possible. The repetitive expressions found in the land purchase negotiations of Chapter 23 and the servant's journey and prayer in Chapter 24 are utilized as a powerful rhythm that demonstrates God's guidance and faithfulness.
Dignity Based on Classical Literary Style: While basing the text on classical literary style, harmony with readability was sought so that modern readers can intuitively understand the context. Vulgarity is strictly excluded, and the perfection of the text as an artistic literary style is pursued.
Presentation of Strict Form and Relationship: Hiragana is replaced with Kanji as much as possible to maintain visual gravity. To express the absoluteness of God, archaic expressions of respect (such as 'tamau') are used only for God's actions, and by maintaining a style that excludes excessive decorative honorifics, the fundamental relationship between God as the Creator and humans as the created is clearly expressed.
[About the Production Background]
This literary translation was generated and edited through collaboration with AI, based on the creator's clear concept. While the original Bible text is in the public domain, this translation is an attempt to aim for a new creative expression by converting it into a unique style based on that foundation. We welcome readers to freely quote and share this for non-profit purposes such as education, research, and private use. However, please refrain from unauthorized modification or commercial use of the text.
2. Commentary
This translation is an attempt to reconstruct the exquisite negotiations and the journey of faith of the original text in Genesis Chapters 23 and 24 within the aesthetic beauty of the Japanese classical literary style.
'Cave of Machpelah' (23:9):
The burial ground that Abraham purchased for four hundred shekels of silver. Later, he himself, Isaac, and Jacob were also buried here, and it became the first firm possession in the Promised Land.
'Four hundred shekels of silver' (23:15):
The currency commonly used by merchants at the time. In the negotiation with Ephron the Hittite, the customs of the ancient Orient are depicted, where a clear agreement of sale is formed amidst polite exchanges that appear on the surface as if offering it for free.
'Put your hand under my thigh' (24:2):
A solemn oath ceremony of the time. It signifies a grave pledge involving descendants, that is, the source of life and God's promise.
'Aram-Naharaim' (24:10):
Meaning 'Aram of the two rivers,' a region in northwestern Mesopotamia. It was the land where Abraham's relatives lived.
'O Lord, God of my master Abraham' (24:12):
The servant's posture of relying not on his own wisdom but on the absolute guidance and faithfulness (hesed) of God is depicted as a dignified prayer.
'Rebekah' (24:15):
The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, Abraham's brother. Chosen as Isaac's wife through God's guidance.

וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן קָבַר אַבְרָהָם אֶת־שָׂרָה אִשְׁתּוֹ אֶל־מְעָרַת שְׂדֵה הַמַּכְפֵּלָה עַל־פְּנֵי מַמְרֵא הִוא חֶבְרוֹן בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן׃

Vayyo'mer 'elav 'Avraham, hishamer lekha pen-tashiv 'et-beni shammah.
And said / to him / Abraham / beware / for yourself / lest / you return / my son / there.
24:7 The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, 'To your offspring I will give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

24:15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her jar on her shoulder.
