Hebrew Parallel Text: Literary Translation of Genesis (3)

Hebrew Parallel Text: Literary Translation of Genesis (3)

v1.3

1. Translation Policy

This translation is an artistic endeavor to reconstruct the spirit and majesty inherent in the original Hebrew text using the dignified resonance of classical Japanese literary style. Beyond the confines of a literal translation, it aims to express the grand narrative of Genesis in a unique style through the incorporation of free translation and adaptation.

In the process of translation, the following basic principles were strictly adhered to.

Emphasis on Concise Expression and Rhythm: Taking the economy of language found in Waka and Haiku as a model, redundant particles and decorations were stripped away as much as possible. The persistent repetitive expressions found in the genealogy of Chapter 5 are also utilized as a powerful rhythm indicating the chain of life.

Dignity Based on Classical Literary Style: While basing the text on classical literary style, harmony with readability was sought so that modern readers can intuitively understand the context. Vulgar tones are strictly excluded, and the perfection of an artistic literary style is pursued.

Presentation of Strict Style and Relationships: Hiragana is replaced with Kanji as much as possible to maintain visual gravity. To express the absoluteness of God, archaic honorific expressions (such as "tamau") are used only for God's actions, and by maintaining a style that excludes excessive decorative honorifics, the fundamental relationship between God the Creator and humans as created beings is clearly expressed.

[About the Production Background]

This literary translation was generated and edited through collaboration with AI, based on the creator's clear concept. While the original Bible text is in the public domain, this translation is an attempt at a new creative expression, converting it into a unique style based on that foundation. We welcome readers to freely quote and share this for non-profit purposes such as education, research, and private use. However, please refrain from unauthorized modification or commercial use of the text.

2. Commentary

This translation is an attempt to reconstruct the poetic structure and dramatic development of the original text in Genesis Chapters 5 and 6 within the aesthetic style of classical Japanese literature.
"Walked with God" (5:22, 5:24):
The description that Enoch walked with God and that God took him indicates a special walk of faith that was transferred to God's presence without going through the end of death. The mystery is depicted concisely without losing the resonance of the original language.
"Sons of God" (6:2, 6:4):
Regarding the identity of the "sons of God," interpretations have varied since ancient times, such as the theory that they were fallen angels or the theory that they were the pious descendants of Seth, but this translation respects the original expression and translates it as is.
"Nephilim" (6:4):
Ancient warriors said to have been born between the sons of God and the daughters of men. The theory that the etymology is "those who fall" is also a prominent one, and they are depicted as symbols of corruption and tyranny on earth.
"God regretted" (6:6):
The expression that the absolute God "regretted" (reconsidered) His own work is a manifestation of God's deep grief and righteousness against human tyranny and sin. This anthropomorphic expression is translated with the weight of the literary style.
"Ark (Tebah)" (6:14):
The Hebrew word referring to the ark that Noah was commanded to build does not mean a normal ship, but a box floating on water. This leads to the theological interpretation that it is not steered by human hands, but is a refuge symbolizing God's perfect salvation and protection.
"I will establish a covenant" (6:18):
This is the place where the word "covenant (berit)" is first explicitly stated in the Bible. It powerfully expresses the promise of salvation that God Himself establishes through grace.
