The map is still a work in progress. | How to navigate the first 30 chapters of "Ella and Yoru"
For those reading Ella and Yoru for the first time
How to navigate the fables of judgment up to chapter 30
The themes are "discrepancies," "maps," and "judgment."
"Ella and Yoru" is a story about Ella, who makes maps while traveling, and Yoru, a girl who can see the color of black "shadows," meeting and walking through the world together.
Swords and magic do appear.
However, what this story is truly depicting is not strength.
Rather than what is correct,
it is about what one chooses.
Why do you do that?
It is a story of such "judgment."
Rather than a flashy adventure tale,
it is a story where the heart moves little by little through the events encountered during the journey and the words of others.
The main story has passed 30 chapters.
For those starting to read from here,
I will summarize how to navigate this story.
The protagonists are these two

Ella
A young woman traveling while making maps.
She is bright, a little off-beat, and strong.
However, deep within that brightness,
there is a reason for continuing the journey and a past she does not easily show.
By her own account, she is not an adventurer, but an explorer.
She is someone who walks the world, observes it, and leaves it on a map.

Yoru
The narrator of this story.
A girl who can see the color of black "shadows."
Quiet and cautious.
However, she is not just a child to be protected.
During the journey, she gradually begins to see with her own eyes,
think for herself,
and make her own judgments.
Characters

Oto
A girl who is a wandering minstrel.
She is bright, laughs often, and is someone who softens the atmosphere of a place.
She is lighthearted when singing, but she is not just lively.
She is good at noticing the silences between people and feelings that cannot be spoken,
and sometimes she supports people more quietly than anyone else.
Raised in a traveling troupe, she has knowledge of martial arts in addition to singing.
She is much more reliable than her appearance or demeanor suggests.
Since joining Ella and Yoru's journey,
she has become a presence that brings a fresh breeze between the two.

Seize
A traveler met at a mountain hut.
A quiet, rational person who is somewhat hard to pin down.
Their words are gentle, but beneath them lies a speed of judgment that can even seem cold.
At first, it is unclear whether they are a friend or a foe.
It is also difficult to see what they are thinking.
However, as the story progresses,
it becomes clear that they were someone wavering between following what is correct and choosing for themselves.
In this story, Seize is also a person who has stepped toward doubting "what should be correct."

Dia
Another traveler met at the mountain hut.
A person who seems calm and gentle.
However, that kindness is not just peaceful,
but also belongs to someone standing while carrying confusion and pain.
The feeling of wanting to be correct for someone else's sake,
and the wavering of whether that is truly okay.
Dia is someone on the side of suffering between those two things.
They are not the type to push forward strongly.
But amidst the unease of the story,
they leave an impression as someone who stood between "obeying" and "not being able to overlook things."
The flow so far

Departure and encounters
Chapters 0-4
The story begins with Yoru leaving the village.
Was I truly loved?
Was there ever a place to call home?
Knowing the answers to those questions, Yoru sets out on a journey.
And in the forest, she meets
Ella, the older sister who fell from the sky.
She has an odd sense of personal space, is bright, and is strong.
But she is also a bit off-kilter.
Yoru begins to find that quirkiness somewhat comforting.
Here,
the map, the colors, the quirks, and the distance between the two begin to come into view.

Limbgard Arc
Chapters 5-11
Limbgard, the safest city in the world.
Here, the value of a map, getting lost, trusting, and "what was done" versus "what was not done" are depicted.
It starts off a bit comical.
How to split silver coins.
A map that doesn't let you get lost.
The harvest festival in the world's safest city.
But after the night of the festival, the story takes a slightly ominous turn.
Suspicion falls on Ella,
and Yoru wavers between the "desire to believe" and the "fear of knowing the truth."
This arc is where their relationship deepens significantly.
In particular,
Chapter11, "After the Lie, the Truth",is the episode where they reclaim the conversation that had come to a halt.

Mountain Cabin Arc
Chapters 12-24
The blizzard-stricken Atora Mountains.
Ella and Yoru take refuge in a mountain cabin,
where they meet Oto the bard and the travelers Dia and Sheez.
At first, it's about songs, cookies, and night watch duties.
But gradually, an ominous atmosphere begins to mingle within.
Eventually, Ella disappears.
Yoru, along with Oto,
follows the black Minia and the invisible traces to search for Ella.
From here on, the story
ceases to be a "story of saving someone"
and becomes a story about reclaiming the ability for the other person to choose for themselves.
Ella is treated as an "Apostle."
But Yoru doesn't want to make Ella a god or someone who is always right.
Ella is fine just being Ella.
This is the arc about reclaiming that truth.

Rubent Arc: Resuming the Journey
Chapters 25-30
After getting Ella back, the three continue their journey.
The next destination is
Ella's hometown, Rubent, which is not on any map.
However, it doesn't immediately become all heavy topics.
The Frog Inn.
The Reckless Boar Tavern.
Strange local delicacies.
Oto's questionable palate.
The daily life of the journey returns as well.
During this time, Ella's sword breaks,
and Yoru encounters a rapier.
Yoru gives that sword
the name Silve.
And Ella, too,
re-examines the parts that remain within broken things.
Chapter30, "The Remaining Part",is where Ella faces for the first time what it means to hold onto something precious.
Even if it breaks, there are parts that remain.
Even if it changes form, there are things that continue.
From here, the story begins to move to the next stage.

In closing
"Ella and Yoru" is not a story that provides the correct answer with strong words.
Getting lost, drifting apart, being unable to speak.
Even so, while walking with someone,
there are things that gradually come into view.
It is that kind of story.
After you finish reading,
rather than an answer,
a small judgment of your own remains.
I hope it becomes that kind of story.
If you'd like, please feel free to read from the parts that interest you.
The map is still a work in progress.
