[Weekly yasu June 7th Issue] To Okinawa with my beloved car... A ferry trip that fulfilled a two-year wish, and a week where I encountered a "support"
Hello, this is yasu.
The first Sunday of June.
I am writing this article in Okinawa right now.
Okinawa is currently in the rainy season.
Outside the window, the sky looks like it will be
cloudy or rainy for a while.
Even so, the sea I catch a glimpse of
is surprisingly clear and beautiful.
The greenery dampened by the rain is colored even more deeply,
and in the humid air that is different from the mainland,
it looks as if it is breathing quietly.
This week was the first week of my long-prepared
stay in Okinawa.
And at the same time, it was a week where a certain "long-held wish"
was fulfilled.
Highlights of the week
A two-year-old wish... Crossing the sea with my beloved car
When we visited Okinawa last time,
we rented a car to get around.
It was a convenient and grateful choice, but
on the day we returned the car, I suddenly thought,
"Someday, I would like to drive
on this island with my own car."
Two years have passed since then.
This time, that wish has been fulfilled.
The car I am driving now is
a relatively new beloved car that I have owned
for only about a year and a half.
What I valued when choosing it was
"that it would support my driving."
Having passed the middle of my 50s,
anxiety about long-distance driving
had started to appear little by little.
That is precisely why
I wanted to value the peace of mind of being firmly supported
by the car more than anything else.
Together with that beloved car,
after a two-day ferry trip,
I was able to set foot on the land of Okinawa.
It is not about specs or features,
but "a wish has taken shape."
That was the greatest joy of this week.
Getting ready before departure... "Preparing for margin" at the port
At the beginning of the week, I set off for the port where the ferry departs.
While taking care of errands along the way, I arrived at the terminal with plenty of time to spare.
Since I arrived early, I first scouted inside the terminal. I also finished filling out the necessary documents without rushing.
Because I had time to spare, I went to a large nearby mall to buy food.
It was larger than I imagined... It had many different shops, and since it was my first time there, I almost got lost.
But thanks to having booked a private room, I should be able to spend my time calmly on board.
Thinking that, I made sure to gather everything I needed.
As I have mentioned several times in previous Weekly yasu issues, "preparing with a margin" is the most effective thing, whether for travel or work.
Time spent without rushing will support you later on.
I realized that once again this time.
The god-like forklift skills I saw while boarding

When boarding, I encountered an unforgettable scene.
The ferry route stops at multiple ports. Cars are guided to load in order based on their destination.
And at the same time, container loading was also underway.
Many supplies being transported to their respective islands.
The people operating the forklifts were responsible for that cargo handling.
I was surprised by the speed and precision of their movements.
They moved at incredible speed, weaving through narrow gaps and efficiently transporting containers.
I found myself watching them for a while.
"I wonder if robots will eventually"
take over this task as well..."
I imagined that for a moment,
but I immediately reconsidered.
"No, human power is still necessary."
Reading the situation on the spot,
making judgments, adapting, and creating a flow.
Therein lies a comprehensive power of human intuition and experience
that is still difficult for machines.
Perhaps I felt this so strongly
because I am at WAY, where we think about working with AI as a partner.
Technology certainly helps people.
But it is precisely because people are there
that technology also comes to life.
Both of these
will become the foundation of our future lives.
The scene I encountered while waiting to board
left me with a profound question.
Two days on the ferry... A calm first day and a second day in the fog
The ferry trip lasted two days.
Since we set sail right after a typhoon had passed on the first day,
I was a little worried about the rocking.
However, it was a calmer voyage than I had expected.
The ship was very clean and well-equipped,
I was able to enjoy a leisurely dinner in the private room I had booked,
and I slept soundly until morning.
It was a perfectly smooth first day.
The second day was a bit different.
There was thick fog from the morning, we had to wait to enter the port,
and because conditions at the scheduled port of call were poor,
we had to make a detour to enter a different port.
As a result, our arrival was delayed by about three hours.
However, I didn't feel much anxiety.
The reason for that
was the wonderful response from the staff.
Every time the situation changes,
they inform us with polite announcements.
Furthermore, through their own broadcasts,
they share our current location and estimated arrival time
in great detail.
"Oh, so this is the situation right now."
"We'll arrive around this time."
Just by knowing that,
anxiety turns into peace of mind.
I remembered having a similar experience
on the Tohoku Shinkansen when it stopped due to an earthquake before.
Back then, too, the conductors and staff
conveyed the situation calmly and politely.
I felt a renewed sense of gratitude,
realizing that daily training and preparation
truly shine in such emergencies.
"In the end, it's all about people."
The WAY motto
resonated with me even in this situation.
Landing in Okinawa... The living environment that welcomed me

Although it was three hours late,
I arrived safely on Okinawan soil.
Driving on the roads of Okinawa with my beloved car.
It was a moment of joy even greater than I had imagined.
I arrived at my accommodation and breathed a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, around where I am staying,
there are supermarkets, drugstores, 100-yen shops, and convenience stores,
making it an environment where I can easily buy what I need.
Since I came here with the intention of a long-term stay,
having this kind of 'living infrastructure'
so close by
is truly a blessing.
For the first few days after arriving,
I spent my time mainly getting my living environment in order.
There are many Okinawan foods
that both my wife and I love,
and I am really looking forward to our meals from now on.
Since I am here with my wife,
I am also able to make progress on my WAY work
little by little from my new location.
Not just traveling,
but 'working while living'.
It was a week where I finally
took the first step toward that.
Articles delivered this week
This week was the week that the "Tracing the Origins" series
finally concluded.
Over the course of four parts,
I traced the path from events nearly 50 years ago
to the WAY of today.
Part 3 is a story that begins with
a phone call from the principal saying, "I want you to take on the role of promoter."
ICT, programming, school-wide research.
Days spent wanting to find moments where children's eyes
would shine, even amidst the busyness.
And the words repeated in the staff room.
"You don't have to compare yourself to anyone.
You are fine just as you are."
Those are words for the children,
and they are also words for us today.
The final installment is the culmination of a 33-year journey.
Encounters with technology,
what I learned from a quiet mentor,
and the motto that "it's okay to be yourself."
After tracing it all,
one phrase remained.
"In the end, it's about people, isn't it?"
It wasn't a flashy encounter.
It wasn't a dramatic turning point.
It was just someone close by, quietly and warmly,
staying by my side.
That accumulation
has become the roots of the current WAY.
To everyone who read the series to the end,
thank you very much.
This week's "Addition Method" review
This week, I'll look back using the addition method again.
・I was able to prepare for the departure to Okinawa with plenty of time.
・I was able to act early at the port, and shopping was completed smoothly.
・I had time to think deeply about the relationship between AI and humans after seeing the god-like skills of a forklift operator up close.
・I spent two comfortable days on the ferry.
・Even with the delay on the second day, I was able to spend the time with peace of mind thanks to the polite response of the staff.
・The dream of "going to Okinawa with my beloved car" was realized.
・I was blessed with the surrounding environment of my destination and was able to start adjusting my rhythm of life.
・Together with my wife, I am able to continue my work for WAY little by little from our destination.
・All four parts of the "Tracing the Origins" series were successfully completed.
I was able to write nine points.
As a week of travel,
it was as fulfilling as it could possibly be.
Gratitude and interaction

In conclusion... upon so much "support"
Looking back on this week,
I realize that this trip
was built upon so much "support".
The precise and reliable skills
of the people operating the forklifts.
The polite and warm service
of all the ferry staff.
The convenient living environment of the island that welcomed me.
And my beloved car, which ran the long distance with me and brought me here.
Behind every single event, there were always human hands and human hearts.
"In the end, it's all about people."
This motto of ours as a couple
has come to life as a realization
again and again during this first week of our Okinawa trip.
Because WAY is about thinking of ways to work with AI as a partner, I feel this strongly.
Technology certainly helps our lives. But it is because people are there that technology also comes to life.
Having both of them together. I believe that will become the foundation of our lives from now on.
For the next month, while living slowly in Okinawa, I want to see for myself how AI and technology are being utilized in this region and how they are supporting people's lives.
And, one announcement.
WAY can be handled even from a remote location. If you have any consultations or need to reach out, please feel free to contact me as usual.
Even from Okinawa, I will continue to be by your side, just as always.
Next week's preview... Life in Okinawa, in earnest
Starting next week, I will begin my full-scale stay in Okinawa.
I plan to enjoy the rhythm of life while slowly starting to cover the local area.
I will be delivering new scenery from Okinawa to you every week from now on.
Not a trip, but a life. Not tourism, but living.
I would like to slowly put into words the Okinawa that I see from that perspective.
