But I do not view that pessimistically.

Society becomes the world.
And as they grow, they learn that they are not the center of the world.

It seems that humanity is walking the same path.
When writing a cosmic epic, I sometimes think that human history is not so much a history of knowledge, but a history of the expansion of perspective.
The range of what we can see expands.
The range of what we can understand expands.
And each time, our own positioning changes as well.
What I describe in Chapter 6, "The Understander", is precisely that change.
When Galileo pointed his telescope at the sky, the human world expanded.
When Darwin presented the theory of evolution, the human past expanded.
When astronauts looked at the Earth from space, the human perspective expanded.
As a result, humanity is beginning to position itself within the universe.
I initially thought this was a chapter about science.
But now I feel a bit differently.
I think this is a chapter about self-awareness.
Science explained the universe.
However, that is not all it did.
Science gave humanity the opportunity to re-examine itself.
The result of this was diverse values, free thinking, and a broader worldview.
But at the same time, it also relativized things that were previously thought to be absolute.
Nation.
Ethnicity.
Religion.
Culture.
These are still important things today.
But in the face of the universe, they are no longer absolute.
This is freedom.
And it is also anxiety.
Some of the diversification and division in modern society may not be unrelated to this change.
While writing Chapter 6 of the "Epic of Understanding," I am thinking about such things.
Science did not change the universe.
What changed was humanity.
And even now, every time humanity tries to understand the universe, it is re-understanding itself.
