A Mother of Two Mimicking a High-Powered Career Woman | Site Map/About Me
Welcome, thank you for visiting.
This is a site where I weave together lessons I've managed to pick up from work stories that are quite intense, as well as from the daily life of a working mom trying to figure out how to balance parenting and a career while being at the mercy of two little monsters (my sons), aged 0 and 2.
Background: I aimed to be a high-powered career woman and became a working mom in management, only to burn out during my second pregnancy.
When I was in elementary school, I would write in my profile book that I wanted to be a
“globally active businessperson.”
At 12 years old, I was a cheeky, sharp-tongued child aspiring to have a high-powered career. That cheeky child, believing that “high-deviation-score schools must be full of interesting and excellent people,” followed her cram school teacher’s advice and entered a prestigious school she knew nothing about. While being swept along by her excellent peers, she somehow managed to slide into a top-tier university.
I wanted to do interesting work. I threw myself into my job with that single-minded focus.
And so, 10 years passed, and a model corporate drone was born.
I cut my maternity leave for my first child short because I was at an interesting point in my work, and returned to the office. I struggled to balance child-rearing and my career, and in the process, I was promoted to management.
However, my interesting work fell apart during my second pregnancy. I used the pregnancy as a reason to take leave quickly, and I have been away from work for over a year since then.
I am currently on a one-year parental leave with my husband.
Why I started Note
I want to do work that I find interesting.
Work has always been an important part of who I am. After my children were born, the priority of work dropped.Even so, I still want to work.Since I am using limited time, I want to be honest with my desires and do things that I truly find interesting.
When I went on maternity leave for my second child, my project collapsed, and the thought of changing jobs crossed my mind.
I have worked at the same company since I graduated, and I have no experience in changing jobs or being seconded. I was in a typical Japanese company, steadily accumulating terminology, etiquette, and connections that only made sense within the company.
Even if I can no longer do interesting work at my current workplace, I want to be able to do interesting work elsewhere. If possible, I want to be able to create interesting things myself.
That is why I started Note.
By openly sharing the process of my struggling, I hope it will be of some reference to those who want to pursue interesting work.
What I write/want to write about
The twists and turns until I reached interesting work
I got bored of routine work shortly after joining the company, cried to my professor that this wasn't what I expected and that I wanted to return to university, and after many twists and turns, I finally managed to reach interesting work.
I will share that process and the things I value even when doing work that isn't interesting.
What I did when I felt my work was “worthless” as a new graduate
A way of thinking that makes the worry of “work isn't interesting” feel ridiculous
The story of how I got bored of routine work shortly after joining, cried to my professor that this wasn't what I expected and that I wanted to return to university, and eventually managed to make my work interesting
The story of how I frankly told my direct supervisor that I wanted to do different work and got recommended for a transfer
The story of how I missed every chance for an overseas assignment and am now thinking about my next strategy
Interesting work and the social implementation of technology
Work that I find interesting. That is solving social issues through technology.
I share insights and stories of failure gained while working on the 'social implementation of technology,' which involves delivering inventions to society.
Inventions alone cannot change the world. What is the job of delivering inventions to society?
Delivering inventions to society. Who are the people responsible for this?
New business in a large corporation: the reason for failure is being too poor at closing.
Working mom trying to survive
Once you have children, you cannot work the same way you did before. This was something I was confronted with, along with a painful failure, when I returned to work after my first child. I am gradually exploring ways to work where I can produce results without being hands-on myself.
Pregnant working mom. What I quit and what I continued when I was at capacity.
Business trip to Europe at 10 weeks pregnant: what I prepared.
To moms returning to work in April and leaving their 0-year-old child at daycare.
Letting go of my obsession with being a 'high-powered career woman' just before returning to work.
A working mom before returning to work: thinking about balancing career and child-rearing.
My first job change experience: while raising two preschool children.
I started job hunting while on maternity/childcare leave.
During childcare leave, I realized I could no longer return to this workplace.
Job hunting during my second childcare leave. Facing the urge to insist on a higher salary.
Family/Childcare
Since giving birth, I have experienced many emotions for the first time.
I'm at that age where I want to look everything up. I spent time scouring the internet to see what others thought, and it was so interesting!
I hope to share what it's like with my two little monsters, aged 2 and 0, and the realizations I have in our daily life together.
By the way, the top image is a photo of my little monster wearing his mom's shoes. He can't put on his own shoes yet, but he can wear my oversized ones.
Sigh, so cute.
About my posts/note
This is my first time ever speaking out into the unknown world of the internet.
I might record the process of worrying, getting lost, or being overwhelmed by desires.
So, I'm a slightly disappointing mother of two aiming to be a career woman, and I'll be talking about work and childcare.
Nice to meet you all!
