In Chapter 3, I depicted the finitude of the observer.
Stars age, life ends, civilizations fall silent, and artificial intelligences also fall silent when they lose the structures that support them. No matter how advanced an observer may be, they are not eternal.
Chapter 3 was a chapter that depicted that fact not as a tragedy, but as a natural change in the universe.
However, one question remains here.
If the observer disappears, is that observation truly lost?
In the first half of Chapter 4, I decided to address that question by depicting the relationship between "events" and "history."
In Section 1, "What is Engraved," I focused on the perspective that an event that has occurred cannot be undone.
That a star was born.
That life sprouted.
That a civilization rose up.
That an observer gazed upon the universe.
Even if these are lost from the memories of individual lives or civilizations, they are positioned as "events that occurred" within the progression of the universe.
Here, "engraved" does not mean recorded on stone monuments or in books.
It means that events are added to the progression of the universe itself.
In Section 2, "What Remains," I advanced the perspective further.
Things with form change.
Mountains are eroded, seas change their shape, and stars also change.
Life, civilizations, and recording media will all eventually unravel.
However, the crumbling of form is not the same as an event becoming nothing.
Here, I treated information not as a strict physical definition, but as a symbol within an epic.
In other words, it is the perspective that "what happens within me becomes my own history."
What I was careful about in this chapter was not to make it a story where knowledge is passed directly from one civilization to another.
As depicted in Chapter 2, intelligence is scattered across various places and eras in the universe.
They do not necessarily meet, nor can they necessarily communicate.
Therefore, the "Inheritors" depicted in Chapter 4 are not about inheritance between civilizations.
What is doing the inheriting is the universe itself.
Individual lives are finite, and civilizations are also finite.
Even so, each individual event quietly takes its place in the progression of the universe.
