Over 160 Types!? Regionally Diverse "Animal Crossing" Signs

One of the signs with the same meaning but a wide variety of designs is the "Danger: Animals Crossing" (so-called "Animal Crossing") sign. In this article, we will delve into the truth behind animal crossing signs, which are said to number around 35 types of animals, and over 160 types nationwide when including design variations.

Standard Form

(214-2) The "Danger: Animals Crossing" warning sign is installed on the left side of the road 30m to 200m before a point where it is recognized that there is a need for caution in road traffic due to the risk of animals jumping out (Source: Order on Road Signs, Pavement Markings, and Road Markings).

This sign is a relatively new one, established in 1986 (Showa 61). It states that "if there is a risk of animals other than deer jumping out, a symbol representing the shape of the animal in question shall be displayed as appropriate." At the time the sign was established, a standard form was specified for deer, and for the three types of monkeys, rabbits, and raccoon dogs, standard designs were distributed by the then-Ministry of Construction.

Deer

Deer signs can be seen all over Japan. For deer, the design established by the UN is used as the standard in Japan as well, with the antlers extending from back to front. However, the Sika deer and Ezo deer that live in Japan have antlers that extend from front to back, which is the opposite direction of the standard sign form. For this reason, in some places, such as around Nara Park in Nara Prefecture and in Hokkaido, the signs feature designs where the antlers grow in the opposite direction to the standard form. Raccoon Dog

Raccoon dog signs can also be seen all over Japan, and can even be found within major metropolitan areas. Depending on how the sign is made, there are some variations in the standard raccoon dog design, such as whether only the area around the eyes is white, whether the whiskers or mouth parts are blurred, or whether the ears are pointed or rounded. In addition, many other variations of the design are known. (Described later)

By the way, in recent years, they have expanded their living range and have become relatively frequently sighted in urban areas, such as within the 23 wards of Tokyo.

Rabbit

Rabbit signs are rarer compared to other standard forms like deer, raccoon dogs, and monkeys. Even so, they can be seen on mountain roads and expressways in the Niigata-Shizuoka-Gifu region and in Kyushu. Various variations of the rabbit design are also known. (Described later)

Monkey

Monkey signs are frequently seen from the southern Tohoku region to the Kanto and Chubu regions. There are also some variations for monkeys. (Described later)

Supplementary Signs

Also, the "Danger: Animals Crossing" warning sign is usually installed as a set with the (509-4) "Danger: Animals Crossing" supplementary sign. The reason for this is that because it is a relatively new establishment, "for the time being, a supplementary 'Animal Crossing' sign shall be attached to ensure awareness among users when installing it."

Mammals

Wild Boar
Commonly seen from Northern Kanto to Chubu, Kansai, and Kyushu. Perhaps because there is no set standard, there are a huge number of variations, with about 30 types. In the Kanto region, most are silhouettes, while in Kansai and Kyushu, there is a tendency for more illustrations. Cute illustrations are often unique to specific roads or municipalities, or are one-of-a-kind.

Cattle
Cattle have the most variations of any animal, totaling about 40 types. Many are one-of-a-kind (or a single pair for both directions) specific to their location. While seen in Kyushu and Honshu, most are found in Hokkaido. It seems that Kyushu and Honshu often feature black silhouettes, while Hokkaido often features Holstein designs.

Note that cattle are not wild but are completely domesticated, so they are under human management. For this reason, they are only seen near ranches or pastures. They are often installed within ranches, but these are not counted as they are not official signs installed by road administrators.

Horse
As expected, these are mostly seen in Hokkaido. They are also found in small numbers in Kyushu and Honshu. There are designs with people riding them and designs showing only the face. There are about 20 types in total.

Weasel (Hiroshima Prefecture)
Signs featuring animals that look like weasels can be seen in multiple locations along the Ota River in Hiroshima Prefecture. While there are rumors that some are "otters," the Hiroshima Prefectural Road Management Division has stated they are weasels.

Fox and Raccoon Dog (Hokkaido)
In Hokkaido, there are signs that feature both a fox and a raccoon dog as a pair. There are both monochrome and colored versions. The colored ones are "Red Fox and Green Raccoon Dog." Reeves's muntjac (Izu Oshima, Tokyo)
A deer species that lives only on Izu Oshima in Tokyo and in the southern part of Chiba Prefecture. On Izu Oshima, Reeves's muntjacs that escaped from a zoo in 1970 have naturally bred and increased in number, becoming a nuisance animal.

On Izu Oshima, animal crossing signs for Reeves's muntjacs were installed in recent years. In southern Chiba Prefecture, the standard deer design is used.

Bear
Found on Honshu and Hokkaido. The species on Honshu is the Asian black bear, while in Hokkaido it is the brown bear. The designs on Honshu are often relatively cute, whereas those in Hokkaido are mostly simple silhouettes.

Around Nara Park, which is famous for its deer, more than 150 deer-related accidents occur annually. In 2014 (Heisei 26), a deer zone was established, and signs and road markings were installed. The deer signs installed here have antlers that point in the opposite direction (from front to back) compared to the standard type, following the way the antlers of Sika deer actually grow.

It seems that the version with the antlers growing in the opposite direction is also frequently used on expressways for the Ezo deer, which are commonly seen in Hokkaido. Perhaps regions that are conscious of their deer brand use the version with the antlers growing in the opposite direction. However, the preference seems to differ depending on the road administrator, even within the same region.

Also, there seem to be cases where signs with special designs are intentionally adopted to make them stand out in order to notify drivers that there are many accidents.

Raccoon dog (non-standard type)
For raccoon dogs, there are about 30 types, including variations of the standard type such as those with white eyes or with/without whiskers, as well as a very large number of non-standard types. By the way, it seems that various other non-standard illustrations were seen in the past (such as designs collaborating with deer), but some places have abolished their unique designs at the time of renewal. Many of the cute illustrations are one-of-a-kind or specific to a road or a particular municipality.
