In what kind of environment does life originate?
And are those conditions unique to Earth, or is it a phenomenon that can occur anywhere in the universe?
Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary field of research that scientifically tackles this question.
Astrobiology Program
NASA's Astrobiology Program was established in 1998 and studies the "origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life" by integrating many fields, including biology, astronomy, geology, chemistry, and planetary science.
The purpose of this research is not just to look for aliens.
It is first to understand how life originated on Earth, and based on that knowledge, to explore where in the universe environments capable of supporting life might exist.
The scope of the research is extremely broad.
Everything related to life is a subject of study, from microorganisms living in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, organisms in extreme environments like Antarctica and deserts, organic molecules in meteorites, planetary atmospheres, and subsurface ice, to even distant exoplanets.
Many of NASA's exploration missions are also being conducted based on this concept of astrobiology.
On Mars, we are investigating evidence of past liquid water to explore whether the environment was capable of supporting life.
On Jupiter's moon Europa, the existence of an ocean beneath the ice is considered highly likely.
On Saturn's moon Enceladus, plumes containing water vapor and organic molecules have been observed, drawing attention to the possibility that the conditions necessary for life may be present.
Biosignatures (Traces of Life)
Furthermore, in recent years, observations of exoplanet atmospheres by the James Webb Space Telescope have progressed, and research has begun to search for "biosignatures" (traces of life) that could potentially be produced by biological activity.
There is no clear answer to astrobiology yet.
However, by trying to understand "what life is" and "what the conditions for life are" before searching for "places where life exists," humanity's exploration is steadily moving forward.
Astrobiology is not just a single academic field.
It is a common language for humanity to understand the possibilities of life in the universe, and it is the science that serves as the foundation for life exploration, leading to Mars, Europa, Enceladus, and distant exoplanets.
