The Story of Being Called by Jakuchu for the First Time - Sen-oku Hakuko Kan Museum Tokyo -
Jakuchu's paintings call out to you.
I would like to introduce this story of my first experience by looking back and recalling it.
The exhibition was at the Sen-oku Hakuko Kan Museum Tokyo in Roppongi, in the autumn of 2022.
Sen-oku Hakuko Kan Museum Tokyo Reopening Commemorative Exhibition III: Wandering Through Ancient Art - A Gaze Toward the East
It was during that time.
As mentioned on the website, this was a major exhibition where 49 items were presented all at once in the gallery.
There was a fairly large exhibition room, and I believe many wonderful hanging scrolls and the like were displayed there.
When I stepped onto that floor and could see the whole room.
Oh, white light is coming from the hanging scroll at the very back...
That was it.
A white light was shining out from the hanging scroll, like a flash.
It was my first time experiencing this, but for some reason, I wasn't very surprised.
Also, because my eyesight is poor, I couldn't visually confirm what painting the 'flash' was, but
I remember thinking vaguely, 'Oh, that's probably Jakuchu.'
As I proceeded slowly along the path to view the art, I got closer to the painting, and it kept shining the whole time.
And as I got closer, I could hear something like, 'Hurry, hurry.'
Oh, so Jakuchu calls out to you.
That was when I first learned that.
At the same time, I thought he must be a cute person.
Among all the paintings on that floor, his own painting was just so amazing that he wanted me to come see it quickly.
He's a very honest person, saying, 'I'm amazing!' He might have an extraordinary desire for self-expression, but I thought that straightforwardness was adorable.
In fact, the painting itself is 'Begonia and White-eyes,' and it is a beautiful yet cute painting with plump white-eyes lined up tightly among beautiful begonia flowers.
This is the episode of being called by Jakuchu for the first time.
I think I started looking at paintings around the Jakuchu exhibition in 2016. So, about six years had passed since I started visiting art museums.
Since then, every time I encounter Jakuchu's paintings, there is some story I want to introduce, but... I will introduce those another time.
As a side note,
I got into Chinese ink wash painting in 2025 and learned that it is actually super rare to be able to see Southern Song dynasty art in Japan.
Even if you want to see it, you rarely can.
(It's a good memory that I even traveled to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan and barely saw any...)
In this exhibition, a 'National Treasure Southern Song Painting' (Attributed to Yan Ciping, 'Autumn Field and Grazing Cattle,' National Treasure) was on display, but I was not called by it.
Perhaps I just can't notice that 'voice'?
The only one who called me (the only one I could notice) was Jakuchu-san.
No matter how much I love Southern Song or Northern Song paintings, unfortunately, I have never been able to receive anything from Chinese ink wash paintings.
Am I unable to talk to the Chinese?
What can I receive and what can I not? I don't even know clearly myself.
This is a mystery I want to solve from now on.
If I find out anything in the future, I would like to report it again.
