Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of the Book of Job (21)
Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of the Book of Job (21)
v1.2
1. Translation Policy
This translation is not a faithful, literal rendering of the biblical text, but an artistic attempt to recreate the spirit of the narrative within the dignified, classical literary style of Japanese literature, including free translation and dramatization. It aims to express the majesty and dramatic development of the original text through a unique style.
In translating, the following policies were observed:
Conciseness and Rhythm: Following the economy of language found in the classics, unnecessary particles and decorations have been stripped away to the limit. The contrast between the intense cries of suffering unique to the Book of Job and the laws of causality spoken by his friends is also brought to life within this rhythm.
Classical Literary Tone: While based on classical literary Japanese, a balance was sought with readability for modern readers. The aim is to reconstruct it as an artistic literary style while avoiding the vulgarity of pseudo-classical writing.
Strict Style: Hiragana, including archaic forms, has been replaced with kanji as much as possible. Furthermore, by avoiding honorifics and humble language entirely, the fundamental relationship between God, the created, and humanity is expressed more directly and powerfully.
[About the Production Background]
This literary translation was generated and edited through collaboration with AI, based on the creator's clear concept. While the original biblical text is in the public domain, this translation is an attempt at a new creative expression, transforming it into a unique style. We welcome readers to freely quote and share this for non-profit purposes such as education, research, and private use. However, please refrain from unauthorized modification or commercial use of the text.
2. Commentary
This translation is an attempt to reconstruct the poetic structure and depth of meaning of the original Hebrew text within the aesthetic style of Japanese classical literature. This manuscript covers chapters 41 and 42, which adorn the conclusion of the Book of Job. Please note that the chapter and verse numbering for chapter 41 in this translation follows the English Bible tradition and differs in some respects from the numbering in the Hebrew text (which begins at 40:25).
Leviathan (41:1):
Following Behemoth in the previous chapter, this is the giant sea creature that God presents as a wonder of His creation. It is a symbol of chaos and absolute power that cannot be controlled by human strength, and is spoken of to highlight the greatness of God's sovereignty.
Repenting in dust and ashes (42:6):
This is the decisive scene where Job, encountering the overwhelming presence of God and the mysteries of creation, realizes the limits and insignificance of his own wisdom. This 'repentance' can be read not merely as an apology for sin, but as a humility that accepts one's own limits and position before God. Furthermore, the original language includes a range of expressions such as 'I despise myself' and 'I retract my words,' making it a passage with diverse interpretations.
Anger at the friends and Job's prayer (42:7-8):
God expresses intense anger toward the three friends who accused Job with the traditional logic of retribution. This is because they did not speak what was right about God, compared to Job. God calls Job 'My servant' and decides to forgive them only through his intercessory prayer.
Job's restoration and blessing (42:10-17):
After Job prays for his friends, the Lord reverses his plight, returns his lost wealth twofold, and grants him children again. This restoration, which comes after long suffering, depicts the richness of God's grace and the fruition of a great plan that transcends human understanding.
