Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of Job (16)
Hebrew Parallel: Literary Translation of Job (16)
v1.2
1. Translation Policy
This translation is not intended as a literal, word-for-word rendering of the biblical text, but rather as an artistic endeavor that reconstructs the spirit underlying the narrative using the dignified resonance of literary Japanese reminiscent of classical literature, incorporating free translation and adaptation. I have aimed to depict the solemnity and dramatic progression inherent in the original text through a unique stylistic approach.
In translating, I have adhered to the following guidelines:
Conciseness and Rhythm: Taking the lean phrasing of classical literature as a model, I have stripped away unnecessary particles and excessive ornamentation. The contrast between the intense cries of suffering characteristic of the Book of Job and the retribution-based arguments of his friends is also expressed within this rhythm.
Tone of Style: While based on a classical style, I have adjusted the balance with readability so that modern readers can read it without difficulty. I have avoided easy, imitative archaisms and sought a reconstruction as an artistic literary style.
Strict Formal Expression: Including archaic expressions, I have converted hiragana to kanji as much as possible. Furthermore, by avoiding honorifics and humble language entirely, I have depicted the fundamental relationship between God, the created, and humanity in a direct and powerful manner.
[Regarding the Production Background]
This literary translation was generated and edited in collaboration with AI, following a clear concept set forth by the creator. While the original biblical text belongs to the public domain, this translation aims to explore a new creative expression by using that foundation to reshape it into a unique style. I welcome readers to freely quote and share this for non-profit purposes such as education, research, or private use. However, please refrain from unauthorized modification of the text or use for commercial purposes.
2. Commentary
Chapter 31 is Job's final self-defense, a magnificent sequence of words in which he pledges his own integrity before God. From purity, fairness, and compassion for the weak, to the rejection of idolatry and even his attitude toward his adversaries, Job thoroughly reviews his own actions and declares that he is willing to be cursed if he has committed any sin. This is the climactic argument seeking God's judgment.
From Chapter 32, a new character, the young Elihu, opens his mouth. Elihu's intense anger burns because he perceives that Job justified himself rather than God, and because the three friends were unable to refute Job and fell silent. It is a tense scene where a young man, who had been silent out of respect for his elders, begins to speak at the urging of his inner spirit.

Job Chapter 32
32:1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
וַיִּשְׁבְּתוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה מֵעֲנוֹת אֶת־אִיּוֹב כִּי הוּא צַדִּיק בְּעֵינָיו׃
Vayishbetu sheloshet ha'anashim ha'elleh me'anot et-Iyyov ki hu tzaddik be'einav.
And ceased / three / men / these / from answering / Job / because / he / was righteous / in his eyes.
32:2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
וַיִּחַר אַף אֱלִיהוּא בֶן־בַּרַכְאֵל הַבּוּזִי מִמִּשְׁפַּחַת רָם בְּאִיּוֹב חָרָה אַפּוֹ עַל־צַדְּקוֹ נַפְשׁוֹ מֵאֱלֹהִים׃
Vayichar af Elihu ven-Barachel habuzi mimishpachat Ram be'Iyyov charah appo al-tzadko nafsho me'Elohim.
And kindled / the wrath / of Elihu / son / of Barachel / the Buzite / of the family / of Ram / against Job / kindled / his wrath / because / he justified / his soul / more than God.
32:3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
וּבִשְׁלֹשֶׁת רֵעָיו חָרָה אַפּוֹ עַל אֲשֶׁר לֹא־מָצְאוּ מַעֲנֶה וַיַּרְשִׁיעוּ אֶת־אִיּוֹב׃
Uvishloshet re'av charah appo al asher lo-matze'u ma'aneh vayyarshi'u et-Iyyov.
And against three / his friends / kindled / his wrath / because / not / they found / an answer / and condemned / Job.
32:4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.
וֶאֱלִיהוּ חִכָּה אֶת־אִיּוֹב בִּדְבָרִים כִּי זְקֵנִים הֵמָּה מִמֶּנּוּ לְיָמִים׃
VeElihu chikkah et-Iyyov bidvarim ki zekenim hemmah mimmennu leyamim.
And Elihu / waited / for Job / with words / because / older / they were / than he / in days.
32:5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his anger was kindled.
וַיַּרְא אֱלִיהוּא כִּי אֵין מַעֲנֶה בְּפִי שְׁלֹשֶׁת הָאֲנָשִׁים וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ׃
Vayyar Elihu ki ein ma'aneh befi sheloshet ha'anashim vayyichar appo.
And he saw / Elihu / because / there is not / an answer / in the mouth of / three / the men / and burned / his anger.
32:6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.
וַיַּעַן אֱלִיהוּא בֶן־בַּרַכְאֵל הַבּוּזִי וַיֹּאמַר צָעִיר אֲנִי לְיָמִים וְאַתֶּם יְשִׁישִׁים עַל־כֵּן זָחַלְתִּי וָאִירָא מֵחַוֹּת דֵּעִי אֶתְכֶם׃
Vayya'an Elihu ven Barachel habuzi vayyomar tsa'ir ani leyamim veattem yeshishim al ken zahalti vaira mehavvot de'i etchem.
And answered / Elihu / son of / Barachel / the Buzite / and said / young / I am / in days / and you / are old / therefore / I feared / and I was afraid / to show / my knowledge / to you.
32:7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
אָמַרְתִּי יָמִים יְדַבֵּרוּ וְרֹב שָׁנִים יוֹדִיעוּ חָכְמָה׃
Amarti yamim yedabberu verov shanim yodi'u chochmah.
I said / days / should speak / and multitude / of years / should teach / wisdom.
32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
אָכֵן רוּחַ־הִיא בֶאֱנוֹשׁ וְנִשְׁמַת שַׁדַּי תְּבִינֵם׃
Achen ruach-hi be'enosh venishmat Shaddai tevinem.
But / a spirit / it is / in man / and the breath / of the Almighty / gives them understanding.
32:9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
לֹא־רַבִּים יֶחְכָּמוּ וּזְקֵנִים יָבִינוּ מִשְׁפָּט׃
Lo-rabbim yechkamu uzeqenim yavinu mishpat.
Not / great ones / are wise / and the aged / understand / judgment.
32:10 Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion.
לָכֵן אָמַרְתִּי שִׁמְעָה־לִּי אֲחַוֶּה דֵּעִי אַף־אָנִי׃
Lachen amarti shim'ah-li achavveh de'i af-ani.
Therefore / I said / hearken / to me / I will show / my knowledge / also / I.
32:11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say.
הֵן הוֹחַלְתִּי לְדִבְרֵיכֶם אָזִין עַד־תְּבוּנֹתֵיכֶם עַד־תַּחְקְרוּן מִלִּין׃
Hen hochalti ledivreichem azin ad-tevunoteichem ad-tachqerun millin.
Behold / I waited / for your words / I gave ear / until / your understanding / until / you search out / words.
32:12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
וְעָדֵיכֶם אֶתְבּוֹנָן וְהִנֵּה אֵין לְאִיּוֹב מוֹכִיחַ עוֹנֶה אֲמָרָיו מִכֶּם׃
Ve'adeichem etbonan vehinneh ein le'Iyyov mochiach oneh amarav mikkem.
And to you / I paid attention / and behold / there is not / for Job / one who convinces / one who answers / his words / among you.
32:13 Beware lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.
פֶּן־תֹּאמְרוּ מָצָאנוּ חָכְמָה אֵל יִדְּפֶנּוּ לֹא־אִישׁ׃
Pen-tomeru matsa'nu chochmah El yiddepennu lo-ish.
Lest / you say / we have found / wisdom / God / thrusts him down / not / man.
32:14 Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.
וְלֹא־עָרַךְ אֵלַי מִלִּין וּבְאִמְרֵיכֶם לֹא אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ׃
Velo-arach elai millin uve'imreichem lo ashivennu.
And not / he directed / to me / words / and with your speeches / not / I will answer him.
32:15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.
חַתּוּ לֹא־עָנוּ עוֹד הֶעְתִּיקוּ מֵהֶם מִלִּים׃
Chattu lo-anu od he'tiqu mehem millim.
They were amazed / not / they answered / anymore / they departed / from them / words.
32:16 When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more)
וְהוֹחַלְתִּי כִּי־לֹא יְדַבֵּרוּ כִּי עָמְדוּ לֹא־עָנוּ עוֹד׃
Vehochalti ki-lo yedabberu ki amedu lo-anu od.
And I waited / because / not / they speak / because / they stood / not / they answered / anymore.
32:17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion.
אַעֲנֶה אַף־אֲנִי חֶלְקִי אֲחַוֶּה דֵּעִי אַף־אָנִי׃
A'aneh af-ani chelqi achavveh de'i af-ani.
I will answer / also / I / my part / I will show / my knowledge / also / I.
32:18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me.
כִּי מָלֵאתִי מִלִּים הֱצִיקַתְנִי רוּחַ בִּטְנִי׃
Ki male'ti millim hetziqatni ruach bitni.
Because / I am full / of words / constrains me / the spirit / of my belly.
32:19 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.
הִנֵּה־בִטְנִי כְּיַיִן לֹא־יִפָּתֵחַ כְּאֹבוֹת חֲדָשִׁים יִבָּקֵעַ׃
Hinneh-vitni keyayin lo-yippateach ke'ovot chadashim yibbaqe'a.
Behold / my belly / is like wine / not / opened / like wineskins / new / it will burst.
32:20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.
אֲדַבְּרָה וְיִרְוַח־לִי אֶפְתַּח שְׂפָתַי וְאֶעֱנֶה׃
Adabberah veyirvach-li eftach sefatai ve'e'eneh.
I will speak / and I will be refreshed / for me / I will open / my lips / and I will answer.
32:21 Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man.
אַל־נָא אֶשָּׂא פְנֵי־אִישׁ וְאֶל־אָדָם לֹא אֲכַנֶּה׃
Al-na essa fene-ish ve'el-adam lo achanneh.
Not / please / I will accept / the face of / a man / and to / a human / not / I will flatter.
32:22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.
