[My Work] Spring is a season prone to mental health issues [Students/Working Professionals/Stress Check]
Spring is known as a time when the autonomic nervous system is prone to instability.
I read this in the news.
--
Spring is the season of cherry blossoms, and it is a time that is very beautiful and soothing just to look at, so it is my favorite season (excluding the scattering of pollen...)
However, in general society, it is also a time when people, from new students and new employees to those starting a new semester or fiscal year, must adapt to new environments.
Furthermore, the body's state of tension as it tries to adapt to significant changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure can also disrupt the autonomic nervous system and easily lead to mental health issues.
As a result, as represented by news stories such as "resigning immediately after joining a company (using a resignation agency service)", there are many people who cannot adapt to that new environment.
In such cases, so that you do not have to carry the burden and worry alone,
"Why is spring a time when mental health issues are prone to occur?"
"You are not the only one who finds it easy to have mental health issues in the spring; it is not something that occurs solely due to your own personal problems."
I would like to summarize the following to help you understand these points.
-
1. Signs of mental health issues
Mental health issues are difficult to manifest externally, so it takes time to become aware of them.
However, it is said that the following things are signs.
"Changes in Sleep Patterns"
1. Difficulty falling asleep
2. Unable to sleep soundly
3. Waking up multiple times during the night
First, 1 through 3 are about "sleep".
Sleep is one of the first areas where mental health issues tend to manifest, so please be careful.
Also, getting "good sleep" brings significant benefits to your daily life, so regardless of your mental state, try to keep this in mind on a regular basis.
-
"Daily Life"
4. Getting tired easily
5. Strong sense of fatigue
6. Unable to concentrate on things
7. Feeling down and prone to depression
8. Feeling short of breath or palpitations, etc.
4 through 8 are about "signs that appear in daily life."
If you start to feel 4 through 8 strongly even though you are living the same way as before, do not leave it as it is and take action immediately.
Mental health issues do not necessarily improve (heal) with the passage of time, so concrete measures are necessary.

2. Dealing with mental health issues
Now, regarding how to deal with it if you feel the above 1,
regulating your autonomic nervous system
is the goal.
The autonomic nervous system, which automatically regulates bodily functions, consists of the
sympathetic nervous system that activates the body and the
parasympathetic nervous system that relaxes it.
If you have any of the above symptoms, the balance between these two may be disrupted. Let's balance the autonomic nervous system well and prevent mental health issues!
--
3. Concrete methods to regulate the autonomic nervous system
(1) Set a wake-up time and bedtime, and get sufficient sleep
Waking up in the morning and bathing in sunlight increases "serotonin," also known as the "happiness hormone," which leads to mental stability.
--
(2) Eat three well-balanced meals a day
Eating seasonal foods provides more nutrition and increases the enjoyment of eating.
--
(3) Engage in light exercise such as stretching, yoga, or walking
Moderate exercise causes the secretion of brain chemicals that alleviate stress.
When you achieve a pleasant sense of fatigue through exercise, your "parasympathetic nervous system," which functions when you are relaxed, becomes dominant.
--
(4) Spend your days off in a way that allows you to slowly rest your mind and body
For psychological rest, relax by listening to your favorite music, reading a book, or surrounding yourself with scents you enjoy, such as through aromatherapy or bath salts.
*If mental health issues are temporary, self-care such as the methods (1) to (4) above can alleviate symptoms. However, if symptoms do not improve, or if they return quickly after improving, it is important not to shoulder the burden alone but to consult someone or visit a medical institution.
