"Lunch Time
No. 12 [Tenshinhan]"
pp. 198-201, 4-page manga
Born in Osaka in January 1969, a graduate of Kyoto Saga University of Arts,
a work currently being serialized by Miri Masuda that has not yet been compiled into a book.
"Oh, I felt like eating this for the first time in a while,
so I bought it. Tenshinhan. It's heavy.
Well then, time to eat.
This is it, this first spoonful,
delicious!
I hear Tenshinhan is different in the East and West?
I've heard that in Tokyo it's a ketchup-based sweet and sour sauce,
but after 25 years of living in Tokyo, I've never eaten it.
→ The one at my local shop is Kansai-style, light in color.
Kansai-style is a soy sauce flavor with a dashi base.
But honestly, I think I like both.
Because I love 'ankake' (thick starchy sauce).
Come to think of it, in Western cuisine,
were there any dishes that were like ankake?
Things that might actually work well with an ankake sauce:
Paella
Quiche, a local dish from the Lorraine region of France
It might even work on American meatloaf.
Yeah, yeah.
Anyway, well, if you add an ankake sauce,
everything becomes mild. Haha.
Ankake.
Covering the surface, cutting off the outside world.
Life during the ongoing COVID self-restraint.
Inner days without touching others.
Fun things have decreased, but
there are no annoying social obligations
or troublesome gatherings.
After COVID ends,
will I be able to live
by interacting like before?
Right now, it's like being inside a planetarium.
There is no heavy rain or strong wind.
But
I can't discover any new stars.
That's what I thought
during my Tenshinhan lunch.
Thank you for the meal!"
I've known since I was a child that Tenshinhan is crab omelet over rice with thick sauce, but I've never eaten it.
I only know the dish Fuyonghai (crab omelet) by its name and photos.
In the early 1980s, for a very short period,
when I lived alone, I often ate Tenshindon (vegetable stir-fry with thick sauce over rice) at a local ramen shop (what we now call a 'machi-chuka' or town Chinese restaurant),
but I wonder if that shop had Tenshinhan.
