Asked to comment on the background of the case on May 23rd, Family Federation Europe Director Dr. Michael Balcomb says, “As we all know, the current political situation in Korea is chaotic. Presidential elections are coming up soon, and meanwhile, prosecutors seem to be casting a wide net as they try to establish a criminal case against the impeached former President and his wife. Our founder is one of the most prominent citizens of Korea who has dedicated her life for the sake of Korean unification and world peace.”

In a statement the same day, Rev. Demian Dunkley, North American Continental Director of the Family Federation, comments, “True Mother is currently under a temporary travel restriction. Due to her high profile, it is likely that this news will soon begin circulating in Western media as well. […] This development is linked to an ongoing investigation in Korea involving former public officials, including former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.”

Rev. Dunkley explains that one of the persons under investigation is someone referred to in the South Korean media as “former global executive Yoon” – with the same surname as the former president of the country, but not related. According to media reports, Yoon on several occasions allegedly gave the former First Lady gifts – Korean ginseng products, a Chanel handbag, and a necklace with diamonds – in total worth about $43,000.

Dunkley points out that the Yoon in question previously served in a leadership role in the Family Federation. The American leader emphasizes, “Although this situation does not involve any wrongdoing by True Mother, there is a possibility she may be called as a witness – not as someone accused, but as part of the investigation into Dr. Yoon’s activities. This is why the travel restriction has been imposed. In Korea, it’s not unusual for authorities to restrict travel even for people who may simply be called as witnesses.

This is all taking place amid a season of political turbulence in Korea, with ongoing investigations and a national election on the horizon.”

同日発表された声明の中で、家庭連合北米大陸会長のデミアン・ダンクリー牧師（ご夫人は日本人）は、「真のお母様は現在、一時的な渡航制限を受けています。彼女の知名度の高さから、このニュースは間もなく欧米メディアでも報じられるでしょう。[…] この動きは、尹錫悦（ユン・ソクヨル）元韓国大統領を含む元公務員をめぐる韓国で進行中の捜査と関連しています」と述べました。

ダンクリー牧師によると、捜査対象者の一人は、韓国メディアで「元グローバル幹部ユン」と呼ばれている人物だ。ユン氏は韓国の元大統領と同姓だが、血縁関係はない。報道によると、ユン氏は元大統領夫人に複数回にわたり、韓国産高麗人参製品、シャネルのハンドバッグ、ダイヤモンドのネックレスなど、総額約4万3000ドル相当の贈り物を贈ったとされている。

ダンクリー氏は、問題のユン氏がかつて家庭連合の指導的役割を担っていたことを指摘する。このアメリカ人指導者は、「今回の状況は真のお母様の不正行為とは無関係ですが、ユン氏が証人として召喚される可能性があります。被告人としてではなく、ユン氏の活動に関する調査の一環として召喚される可能性があります。そのため、渡航制限が課せられました。韓国では、単に証人として召喚される可能性のある人物であっても、当局が渡航を制限することは珍しくありません」と強調する。
