Church figure attempts to flee
2025.05.24
(abridged)
In response to KBS's inquiry about whether Han attempted to leave the country, the Unification Church denied that Han had ever been to the airport and stated that she had gone to the hospital on that day (the 13th).
As the prosecution's investigation tightens, suspicions may arise that Han attempted to leave the country.

Moonies Leader Barred from Leaving South Korea Amid Expanding Bribery Probe
May 24, 2025
Han Hak-ja Moon, the 82-year-old leader of the controversial Unification Church—commonly known as the “Moonies”—has been banned from leaving South Korea as prosecutors widen a high-profile bribery investigation involving the country’s former first lady. The unfolding scandal was detailed in The Times UK.
Han, the widow of church founder Reverend Sun Myung Moon, is linked to allegations that a shaman with ties to the church gifted luxury items, including a Graff diamond necklace and Chanel handbag worth approximately 60 million won (£32,500), to Kim Keon-hee, wife of former president Yoon Suk-yeol. The gifts were reportedly presented in the summer of 2022, shortly after Yoon took office.
Authorities are investigating whether the extravagant offerings were intended to secure political favors, such as government support for the church’s bid to acquire a TV news channel and increased funding for aid projects affiliated with the organization. The alleged go-between, a shaman known as Geonjin, was part of Yoon’s presidential campaign team and has been questioned over the whereabouts of the gifts, which he claims were lost.
Han Moon, who assumed leadership of the church after her husband’s death in 2012, has not been named a suspect but remains a key witness in the probe. The investigation has also extended to include a former director-general of the church and his spouse.
While the church—now officially known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification—has denied any wrongdoing, prosecutors continue to scrutinize its internal dealings. In a statement, the group distanced itself from the controversy, calling the allegations “the private motivations and actions of one of the many individuals who have been affiliated with the organization.”
The scandal arrives as the church faces mounting pressure globally. In March, a Tokyo court stripped the Moonies of their tax-exempt status and ordered the dissolution of its assets in Japan, citing aggressive donation practices. The 2022 assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe exposed deep ties between the church and Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, leading to a political reckoning over the group’s influence.
The South Korean political landscape remains unsettled following the ousting of President Yoon late last year after a failed attempt to declare martial law. A presidential election is scheduled for next month.
As the investigation unfolds, it threatens to further tarnish the reputation of a religious movement long viewed with suspicion and to deepen scrutiny of political entanglements with powerful religious organizations.
Prosecutors ban Han Hak-ja from leaving South Korea over gift case
By Kim Su-jeong
2025.05.22
The prosecution, which is investigating allegations that Jeon Seong-bae, known as 'Geonjin Beopsa,' received gifts of money from the Unification Church for Kim Keon-hee, has confirmed that the church's leader, Han Hak-ja, was prohibited from leaving the country.
According to the legal community on the 22nd, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office's joint investigation team on virtual asset crimes, led by Director General Park Geon-wook, recently imposed a departure ban on Han. Han is currently a witness, but the prosecution is reportedly not ruling out the possibility of changing his status to that of a suspect.
The prosecution is investigating whether Yun, the former global head of the Unification Church, gave Jeon a luxury diamond necklace worth 60 million won and a Chanel bag under the guise of a gift for the first lady in 2022, while making various requests related to the church's issues. In particular, it is reported that during the investigation into whether the Unification Church was behind Yun's requests, there are suspicions that Han may have been involved.
Meanwhile, the Unification Church denied any knowledge of the situation.
First lady's aides under probe over Unification Church bribery allegations
May 23, 2025
By Choi Jeong-yoon
Prosecutors recently identified all three of former first lady Kim Keon Hee’s aides as being linked to a bribery scandal involving members of the Unification Church.
According to legal sources and media reports Friday, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office placed Yoo Kyung-ok, a former secretary for Kim, under an overseas travel ban as part of its widening influence-peddling investigation against the former first lady.
Yoo, who served as a close aide to the first lady, is suspected of receiving Chanel handbags purchased by a former global executive of the Unification Church — officially known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification — identified by the surname Yoon. Yoo delivered the handbags to Kim, who in exchange, provided favors to the Unification Church by supporting projects in the church's interests.
Records from a raid of Chanel Korea reportedly show that the bags were bought in April and July 2022 under the name of the executive’s sister-in-law. Investigators suspect that Yoo later exchanged the original bags at Chanel stores, paying extra fees of 1 million won ($730) and 2 million won, respectively, for different models.
Prosecutors plan to confront Yoo and Yoon in questioning to determine whether the designer bags were delivered to the first lady and to track their current whereabouts.
Yoo reportedly told investigators she acted on behalf of shaman Jeon Seong-bae, who was already under scrutiny for facilitating the delivery of a 60 million won diamond necklace to Kim, allegedly on Yoon’s behalf.
Two other aides to the first lady are also under investigation.
One of them, surnamed Cho, a former aide, is suspected of being involved in lobbying efforts linked to a foreign aid project in Cambodia. Prosecutors believe Cho may have facilitated communications between the Unification Church and government bodies regarding the Mekong River development proposal — a project Yoon reportedly promoted.
The third aide, identified by the surname Jeong, formerly worked at Covana Contents, Kim Keon Hee’s exhibition company. Prosecutors confirmed that Jeong exchanged messages with the shaman around the time the luxury items are alleged to have been delivered. Investigators are also looking into Jeong’s communications with Jeon’s brother-in-law to assess any further connections in the case.
The probe comes amid mounting public scrutiny over alleged backdoor influence and opaque ties between the Unification Church and figures close to the presidency. Prosecutors are investigating whether the gifts were part of a broader effort to secure government support for overseas business ventures led by the religious group.
Prosecutors previously issued a travel ban for Han Hak-ja, president of the Unification Church, amid the widening investigation. The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office suspects that Han may have been involved in or aware of lobbying efforts tied to the church's former global executive Yoon.
