Just by walking with your back straight, your luck will change little by little—How to cultivate confidence, as taught by May 15th
Getterz Iida has compiled
words for living each day positively for each of the 365 days of the year into a single book titled
“Getterz Iida’s Stories to Improve Your Luck in 365 Days”.
It is a book that reminds us with gentle words of important things we tend to
forget in our daily lives.
I myself want to gain new insights in my daily life, so I use this book to
share content daily. I would be
happy if, at the start of your day, you could feel even a little bit more positive.
This time, I have summarized my thoughts on the May 15th entry, “It is good to walk with confidence and poise.”

■ It is not that you “act with poise because you have confidence”
What was impressive about this message was the idea that
“It is fine to start by ‘pretending to have confidence.’”
When people lack confidence, they tend to look down. Their steps become smaller, their posture hunches over, and their mood can even sink.
However, Getterz Iida suggests that by first creating
・Straightening your back
・Raising your gaze slightly
・Walking with a steady tempo
such
“poised movements”, your feelings will also change
little by little.
In other words, I realized the order is not “gain confidence then act with poise,” but rather
“act with poise, and confidence will grow.”
■ Posture and walking style are conveyed to others more than you imagine
People are seen by their “aura” more than you might think.
If you walk with your head down, you give off an impression that makes you somewhat unapproachable, and you yourself become more easily pulled into negative feelings.
Conversely, just by
・Standing tall
・Taking slightly larger steps
・Walking while looking forward
your impression on others will change.
“They look energetic.”
“They look positive.”
“They look reliable.”
By being seen in that way, the way you interact with others naturally changes, and as a result,
opportunities and connections may expand.
Small differences in posture affect both your own feelings and how you are perceived by those around you.
I felt that as these accumulate, they become a “flow of luck.”
■ Especially when you are anxious, it is fine to “start with the form”
Another thing that stayed with me is the idea that
“Precisely because you lack confidence, you should start by fixing your form.”
In reality, there are rarely days when you can feel perfectly confident.
That is precisely why you should try
・Posture
・Facial expression
・Clothing
・Walking style
and tidy up your "outer self"just a little.
Then, strangely enough,
“I want to become someone worthy of this version of myself”
a feeling will begin to emerge.
The message for May 15this not about "becoming a strong person," but rather, I felt it was
“the more anxious you are, the more you should make it a habit to look forward,”
a piece of gentle behavioral advice.
■ Things to be slightly more conscious of today
If you are going out today, try to be conscious of these things for at least the first three minutes:
・Keep your back straight
・Raise your gaze slightly
・Take slightly larger steps
.
Even while waiting for a train or bus, try
looking upa little before looking at your smartphone.
When entering your workplace or school, try walking with the mindset of
“From here on, I am in ‘confident self mode’”
.
Even just doing that might change the atmosphere of your day a little.
■ A "forward-looking posture" changes your luck
I felt that the message for May 15th was not about "waiting for a day when you can feel confident," but rather
“let's start taking actions that cultivate confidence, starting now.”
When people are walking while looking forward rather than looking down, they naturally become able to
look toward the future.
May this day be one where you can walk with your head held high even just a little.
