What are the types of TOEFL Exam?

The types of TOEFL Tests currently available are explained as follows:

1. What is TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL iBT stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test. It is an online version of the TOEFL exam, allowing candidates to take the test digitally instead of using the traditional paper-based format.

The TOEFL iBT assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who aim to study or work in English-speaking environments. It measures four key language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. TOEFL iBT is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and institutions worldwide as a reliable measure of English language proficiency.

2. TOEFL iBT Home Edition

The TOEFL Home Edition is an option provided by ETS for candidates to take the TOEFL iBT test from the comfort of their homes. Introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this option allows test-takers to complete the exam remotely, eliminating the need to travel to a test center.

To appear in the TOEFL Home Edition, candidates must ensure that their computer and internet connection meet the technical requirements specified by ETS. Additionally, they need to have a quiet and suitable testing environment to maintain test integrity.

During the exam, candidates are monitored by a human proctor via live video and audio feed, as well as through AI technology, to ensure test security and prevent cheating. The exam content, format, and scoring are the same as the traditional TOEFL iBT test administered at test centers.

After completing the exam, test-takers receive their scores within 6 to 10 days, similar to the standard TOEFL iBT test. The TOEFL Home Edition provides a convenient and safe option for candidates to fulfill English proficiency requirements for study abroad applications.

3. The TOEFL Essentials Test

The recently introduced TOEFL Essentials test assesses individuals' English proficiency across various contexts, extending beyond academic settings. Developed by ETS assessment experts and evaluated by both certified human assessors and AI tools, the test ensures credibility and precision. Unlike the TOEFL iBT, TOEFL Essentials is notably shorter, lasting 90 minutes and encompassing four key English language skill sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Overall, TOEFL Essentials aims to provide a global perspective, featuring tasks in its sections that present a range of accents and scenarios from diverse locations worldwide. Test registrations commenced on June 17, 2021, with the inaugural tests scheduled for August 21, 2021.

In addition to these recent developments, with regard to examination format, there were previously two types of TOEFL exams available:

  1. TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT)
  2. TOEFL Paper-Based Test (pBT)

However, according to an announcement by ETS dated April 21, 2021, the TOEFL pBT has been discontinued, leaving only the TOEFL iBT in operation worldwide.
