[Breaking News] Akayashio Azaleas in the Deep South are in Full Bloom | Summary of Areas to Visit Now and Peak Viewing Times

The Akayashio azaleas in the Deep South are absolutely perfect right now.
Furthermore, I felt that there is a high possibility that this year is a 'banner year'.
Based on information from actually hiking a 30km traverse,
I have summarized the peak viewing areas and points of caution.

■ Conclusion

As far as I hiked this time,
the area from Iwatakeyama to Takatsukayama and around Sobatsubuyama was at its peak viewing time.

・Elevation range: Approximately 1,200m to the ridgeline
・Condition: Full bloom to peak
・Volume: Very high (there are sections that form tunnels)

※This week to the first half of next week looks like the best timingto visit.

■ Actual conditions

Mitsuba-tsutsuji azaleas bloom right from the trailhead, raising expectations immediately.

As you continue to climb,
the Akayashio start to increase rapidly around Iwatakeyama,

**The area from Iwatakeyama to Ryumagatake was a 'full bloom zone'.**

I stopped so many times, and in some places,
it was like a tunnel of Akayashio.

What surprised me even more was
that they were also blooming well around Sobatsubuyama.

※It felt like a banner year where you can enjoy them not just in the first half, but all the way to the end.

■ Especially good sections

・Iwatakeyama to Ryumagatake: High density and fun to walk through
・Around Ryumagatake: Peak full bloom zone
・Around Sobatsubuyama: Good balance of scenery and Akayashio

※Rather than 'where is the best,' it was 'a hit overall'

Although not included in this route,
Nokogiriyama, Oofudayama, Tensui, and the area around Asahidake are also areas where Akayashio bloom.

Since they may be at their peak viewing time as well,
this might be helpful for route planning.

■ Views

The forecast was for high clouds, but it actually cleared up.

From Sobatsubu Mountain, I could clearly see:
・Mt. Fuji
・The ridgeline of the Deep South of the Southern Alps

It was clearly visible.

■ Points of Caution

This area is not 'recommended for everyone'.

・Ryomagatake to Takatsukayama: Some unclear sections (route finding required)
・Climb to Takatsukayama: Steep ascent
・Sobatsubu Mountain South Ridge: Steep slopes (caution required on descent)

Furthermore, especially important this time

・National Route 362 has a collapse → Use the detour (as of April 2026)
・Some parts of the forest road detour are in poor condition

*Prior information gathering is essential

■ Regarding Leeches

They were not yet out in full force at this time.
*However, they will definitely increase from here on, so be careful.

・Those accustomed to long distances (20–30 km)
・Those who can perform route finding
・Those who want to enjoy flowers in a quiet mountain area

I have walked this mountain area before with the goal of seeing Akayashio azaleas,
and this is my 6th time.

・2021: Round trip of Fudodake East Ridge from Sumatakyo

・2023: Iwatakeyama Loop
・2024: Katsusaka to Baratani-no-kashira
・2025: Kazeirazu to Oomukenyama to Asahidake

Among them, this year (2026) left a particularly strong impression for its good flowering.

I see the Akayashio in the Deep South every year at this time, but
I feel like it is rare to have a year where they are all in bloom like this.

In exchange for unclear routes and long journeys,
the full-bloom Akayashio and the expansive ridge scenery were waiting for us.
