[Anime] The art is just too beautiful...!! Which animation studio is behind "Witch Hat Atelier"?!?!
Hello, I'm Umi🐬✨
I'm a college student aiming to become a shonen manga editor.
Today, I'd like to talk about my thoughts after watching the work called "Witch Hat Atelier"!
I recently started watching this series after a friend recommended it to me because of the anime adaptation, and the art is just sooooo beautiful! The colors are incredibly vivid, the lines are drawn with such care, and I'm enjoying every single episode😍
Work Overview
This work has been serialized in Kodansha's Morning since 2016. The author is Kamome Shirahama. As for the general plot, the protagonist, Coco, lives in a world where only wizards can use magic, and she has longed for that magic for a long time. One day, a wizard comes to the fabric shop run by Coco's mother. There, Coco realizes that magic is not something you "cast," but something you "draw." Coco eagerly pulls out a magic set she received at a festival when she was little and begins to "draw" magic, but...?

By playing on the common phrase "casting magic" and changing it to "drawing," the story woven in a world where anyone can "draw" magic made me think that maybe the readers could also "draw" magic, so I thought the concept behind the words was very interesting. Also, the magic circles drawn by the wizards are composed of symbols with rules and meanings, much like mathematical formulas, so it's very fun to think about them yourself!
Since the anime adaptation was announced, it has also been released as a paperback in Kodansha's Aoi Tori Bunko, so please check that out as well!
Things I noticed while watching the work
My first impression of this work was the art is just beautiful, period!!!!!!!! lol
I'm currently reading the manga as well, and the muted colors, or rather, the slightly antique-style color palette, really match the extraordinary world of the work...!!! Plus, every single line is drawn in detail, and it doesn't have that feeling of 2D animation moving too smoothly in a bad way; it's beautiful art no matter where you pause it .
I really love works with a color palette like "The Promised Neverland" , and this work has some similarities (I felt that the way it expresses the otherworldly atmosphere of the work with colors like European stained glass, yet somehow like an old picture book was similar), so I end up pausing and looking at the art many times every episode. lol
So, I was curious about which company is making this work, so I looked it up!!😆😆
It seems to be this animation studio!
I'm really clueless about animation studios, so even when "BUG FILMS" appeared in the ending, I was like, "Who is that...??" lol
The only animation studios I could think of off the top of my head were ufotable, Kyoto Animation, MAPPA, TOHO, Warner Bros., Bandai Namco Filmworks, and Bones, so I opened the BUG FILMS website for the first time, and...
<Produced Works>
・"Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead"
・"Komi Can't Communicate."
・"Summer Time Rendering"
These works were by this company?!?!?! I was like. lol
I had watched the anime for these works without knowing, but I realized that the way light was depicted and the saturation were indeed vivid in a way that faithfully represented the original work while bringing out its best qualities. The reflection of light on the sea in "Summer Time Rendering" was really beautiful, after all.
Just like how I learned about this company for the first time today, my knowledge of animation studios is just too lacking, so I want to look into it a bit more.🫠
"Witch Hat Atelier" has 5 episodes aired so far, and it's also being streamed for free on services like ABEMA, so you can catch up now! Why not watch this work during the rest of Golden Week!
I'd be happy if you could support me with a like and follow🐬✨
I'll keep working hard toward my dreams today!😆
