Listening to the album 'Rikon Densetsu' in track order reveals a superb 'romance novel'!
The album 'Rikon Densetsu' by the rapidly rising duo band 'Rikon Densetsu'.
If you listen to the tracks in order while paying attention to the lyrics, a single story emerges.
It is structured like a romance novel, where the perspective of the man and woman alternates with each chapter. The protagonists of the story are him, who prefers a stimulating, fairy-tale-like, extraordinary world, and her, who seeks unchanging love in everyday life.
What happens after these two fall in love and share their feelings?
Some songs that felt like soothing tracks when played on shuffle on a streaming service change their impression to 'If my lover said this, it would be a horror story...' when incorporated into the story.
Below, I will explain each song from a romantic perspective, heavily incorporating my own subjective views.
1. Ai ga Issou Mellow (Love is Even More Mellow)
The beginning of love. A dramatic, euphoric period of love where heartbeats race when their gazes meet. There is also a hint of the idea that it might be fine to stay in this ambiguous stage of love without letting it mature.
2. Arawarenaide (Don't Appear)
Lyrics from the woman's perspective. Swayed by the man's vague attitude, she pushes him away, telling him 'don't appear' before her, while wishing to move toward a stable relationship. Keywords like 'dream,' 'fairy tale,' and 'fable' appear in the lyrics from his perspective, but from these lyrics, it is clear that she does not seek dreams or fairy tales in love.
3. Tsuioku no Fromage (Fromage of Reminiscence)
Lyrics from the man's perspective. He accepts her (honey's) anxiety, holds her tightly, and their relationship becomes even more mellow (deep).
4. Mabushii, Mabushisugiru (Dazzling, Too Dazzling)
A midsummer date for the two who have shared their feelings. He gazes at her as she frolics, finding her dazzling. Her smiles, which tend to be anxious, increase, and the relationship becomes a bit more stable. This is likely the peak of their love.
5. Moe (Sprout)
The season advances by one, and autumn approaches. She begins to love him and feels supreme happiness when held by him. Her 'dream' that appears in the lyrics is for a happy daily life to continue, which is at odds with his dream.
6. Sequined Woman
A turning point in the romantic relationship. A premonition that their relationship is wavering crosses their minds, but they stop thinking deeply and want to enjoy this moment.
7. Mata Tabi ni Sasowarete (Invited on a Trip Again)
Lyrics from his perspective. The two have finally distanced themselves. After being pushed away by her, he recalls the days he spent happily with her from time to time. It seems she lost patience with him, as his free-spirited nature—preferring 'wanting to play together' over 'wanting to settle down together'—prevailed.
8. You Should Know Your Love
Lyrics from her perspective. Although she has distanced herself from him, she is still lingering on the past. Even though she loves him, there are parts they just cannot reconcile. It is clear that even if they returned to their original relationship, the same things would repeat. To cut off her feelings, she wishes to end the ambiguous relationship and break up decisively to draw a line.
9. Saramappo
He sets off on a journey, just drifting along. Since important things eventually disappear and there is no point in grieving, he decides not to dwell too deeply on the people or things that are no longer in his daily life, choosing instead to play and enjoy the present with those around him. In the eyes of his devoted girlfriend, who could not bear the nature of their relationship, this behavior of his might have seemed carefree and oblivious.
10. Don't Abandon the Fairytale
Lyrics from his perspective. The continuation of the fairytale he dreamed of at the beginning of their love (during 'Ai ga Issou Mellow') has come to an end. He wants to remain forever driven by adrenaline within the extraordinary, immersed in a world of fairytales. His stance remains unchanged: let's wear stylish clothes when we feel like it, put on sexy lingerie, and enjoy a dramatic, extraordinary life together. Surely, she will never come back.
—With that, I have explained the album 'Rikon Densetsu' through the lens of romance, mixing in my own subjectivity and delusions.
In an interview at the time of the album's release, vocalist Ayumu Matsuda mentioned that he writes lyrics from both male and female perspectives, and that his own romantic experiences are incorporated into his songwriting.
While their excellent singing ability, performance skills, and catchy phrases tend to grab the most attention, their songwriting skill, which feels like a serialized novel, is wonderful, so I highly recommend paying attention to the lyrics as well.
It is incredibly well-crafted as a story that allows you to re-experience the beginning and end of a couple's romance.
I recommend listening to the album in track order rather than on shuffle.
