👉 The 70s Dialogue Depicted in 'The Holdovers' — What Does It Teach Us in an Age of Division?
In the blog, I focused on what this film, which depicts people in the 70s, teaches us today.
However, there is another important element that I couldn't fully cover in the blog.
It's that Alexander Payne's films often depict time that feels like the margins of life—taking detours, stories about retirement, or being left behind—and there is a sense of human love in that.
That's why I think Alexander Payne's films don't just end with a momentary emotional impact, but provide an important perspective when we look back on our own lives.

Time left behind
Come to think of it, I feel like I've lived about 80% of my life feeling lost and left behind.
But if you ask me if my life is lonely and dark, it's actually not; I live quite brightly and happily.
That's because, while wandering and being left behind, I've often been able to be honest and have been blessed with bonds with people who can share my heart.
It might not be as wonderful as an Alexander Payne movie, but things similar to the film actually happen in the margins of life.
That's why I can think that life is interesting.

What you see in the time you are left behind
I think what becomes visible during those times of being left behind is something like the true nature of a person, which transcends conditions and attributes.
In today's society, we often judge and are judged by conditions and attributes, much like on a matching app, in an efficient manner.
But humans have a complexity that cannot be measured by such things, and I think there is something like the true nature of a person there, not as a replaceable existence.
In a life with poor cost-performance, one is often blessed with opportunities where those true natures can touch.
Indeed, the characters in this film also find themselves blessed with such connections during the margins of time left behind during the Christmas holidays, building bonds that transcend their differences.
I believe that by watching this film, whether you are currently in a period of life that feels like a margin of time, or if things are going well for you right now, you can think about the meaning that such time gives to your life for when the moment comes that you have to stop.

Conclusion
Director Alexander Payne's films provide important perspectives while also being full of comical and humorous elements.
The foolish, pathetic, uncool, and flawed aspects of human beings are depicted in a funny and warm way.
I feel a sense of love for humanity in that warmth as well.
It is a very enjoyable movie, so if you haven't seen it yet, please check it out. You can watch it on Netflix right now!
