The biggest gap in sneaker history. The youth punk shoe 'Dr. Martens' was actually a recycled shoe that saved housewives suffering from foot pain #PR
1. The ultimate 'anti-fashion' in sneaker history
In our series so far, we have followed the 'madness and drama' that colors the history of sneakers. Nike, which destroyed a wife's waffle maker; Adidas and Puma, which divided a town; and Asics, which took inspiration from an octopus on a dinner table. These were all histories of pure sports gear, designed to shave even a single second off an athlete's record.
However, there exists a 'maverick' in the history of footwear that is completely outside the context of sports. Yellow stitching, thick and transparent rubber soles. It is 'Dr. Martens.' The true form of this boot, consumed as a fashion item by the Sex Pistols and the youth, has absolutely nothing to do with music or fashion. It is a 'comfort shoe designed to reduce the burden on the feet,' created by a military doctor in Germany, where the scars of World War II remained, by applying scrap materials derived from military supplies. (*While the following includes widely known anecdotes and reconstructed stories, I want you to feel the obsession with functional beauty that lies at its foundation.)
2. It all started in 1945 with a German military doctor's fracture
Let's turn the clock back to 1945, Germany at the end of World War II. Dr. Klaus Maertens, a doctor in the German army (Wehrmacht), suffered a serious ankle injury while skiing during his vacation.

The stiff military boots issued by the army at the time were far too painful for a fractured foot. 'Isn't there a shoe that is kinder to the feet and absorbs the shock of walking?' Unable to bear the pain of his injury, the military doctor decided to develop a new shoe sole for his own feet. What he set his sights on were the remnants of military supplies such as tires that had been left exposed in the chaos of the post-war period.
3. Bouncing soles that trapped 'air' in military scrap
Dr. Maertens, in collaboration with his old university friend Dr. Herbert Funck, reused the scrap rubber they had collected to develop a cushioned sole with air sealed inside.

This sole, which bounced with every step, was named the 'Bouncing Sole.' Yes, that thick rubber sole that is synonymous with Dr. Martens was not for young people to jump around in live houses, but an 'orthopedic-approach suspension' created by a fractured military doctor applying scrap rubber to support his own weight. The brand name Dr. Martens literally comes from 'Dr. Maertens.'

4. The irony of history. The first customers were 'middle-aged housewives'
And there is an even more intense irony hidden in this history. When full-scale production of these comfort shoes began in 1947, they became an instant hit. However, the people who flocked to buy them were not punk rockers or rebellious youths.

Surprisingly, many of the early customers are said to have been 'middle-aged women suffering from the burden on their legs and lower backs.' For women who stood all day doing housework or gardening, these cushioned shoes invented by a military doctor were truly magical 'foot-friendly shoes.'
Later, in the 1960s, the license was passed to a British shoe manufacturer (Griggs), where they were adopted as work boots for postal workers and factory laborers, and from there, they underwent a cultural appropriation by working-class youth (skinheads) and punks.
5. Anti-fashion. Wear practical survival gear
Today, Dr. Martens are consumed as stylish boots all over the world. But now that you know this trivia, you should no longer look at these shoes from the shallow perspective of 'youth trends.'

The obsession of a military doctor with a fractured ankle. The use of military scrap materials. And a practical design that reduces the burden on the feet, saving women suffering from leg and back pain. Choosing Dr. Martens' '1460 (8-eye boot)' for your feet on your day off is not an act of pandering to fashion, but a truly clever and mature choice to equip yourself with 'ultimate practical gear' backed by history, in order to survive the asphalt of the peaceful modern age.
