65. Two Weeks Traveling Through My Mother's Youth
Today, I am introducing an essay about an experience of gaining insight through a family 'search for something'. Please be aware that this work contains a bloody scene at the beginning, so please be careful if you are sensitive to such content.
The 'something' being searched for refers to the host family that the author Koh's mother stayed with when she traveled to Canada on a working holiday. This 'twenty-year-long search' was successfully concluded, and Koh and her mother decided to go visit the host mother.
The work vividly depicts the journey from arriving in Canada to reuniting with the host mother, but the core of this work is not the trip itself, but the worries Koh had at the time regarding her future.
Currently, Koh lives in Australia, but according to this work, she used to think the following:
I had thought that living abroad meant I had to bring back some kind of major achievement.
Since things related to work, rather than hobbies, inevitably demand results and reports, it is relatable how such a mindset can be ingrained through one's professional life.
The conclusion of this work is liberation from this spell, and I felt enlightened as a reader as well. Of course, the steps taken beforehand—what was done to make the trip to Canada possible—are truly amazing from the perspective of an ordinary person like me, and I respect Koh for that alone.
As an aside, all the photos from the trip to Canada are wonderful. In particular, I love the photo of her mother and the host mother walking through a sunflower field, which is also used in the article header.
