It is okay to have days when you cannot be gentle with your children.
“Gosh!! That is enough!”
“Stop fighting!”
“Hurry up!”
Aaaahhhhh.
I ended up getting angry again today...
Even though I really do not want to get angry...
I could have said it differently without getting angry...
I always regret it after I get angry...
Why am I like this?
I am so far from the ideal mother I want to be...
I want to be a more smiling, gentle mother...
Looking at my children sleeping with their adorable, peaceful faces,
tears welled up in my eyes.
“I’m sorry... I’m always getting angry...”
I’m so sorry for being this kind of mom...
I felt so filled with
apology toward my children.
Lately, things just haven't been going well at all.
I’ve lost my peace of mind.
My children fight, and
I start to feel anxious, wondering if
my parenting is actually okay...
I’m frustrated with myself.
That just means my own energy
has been completely drained.
It’s like having zero HP in a game...
Somehow, my body isn't recovering from the fatigue either.
But if I don't keep moving, nothing will get done!
I’ve been driving myself with that kind of thinking...
Even though my body was sending out an SOS,
I hadn't been able to notice it myself.
Anyway, this is no good! I have to do something, I thought, and remembered
a bath salt gift from a friend,
so that day, after the children were fast asleep, I decided to add the bath salts and soak in the tub for a while.
It was a beautiful yellow mimosa bath salt.
As I bathed while gazing at the beautiful yellow color,
somehow the frustration completely vanished,
and I felt a sense of brightness and energy being restored.
“Oh. I’m being healed by the color.”
It was an experience where I truly felt the effects of color.
Actually, I’ve always been interested in color,
and I earned a certification in color psychology a few years ago.
But noticing my own recent emotional turmoil,
I pulled out my study materials again,
and took another look at the “power of color.”
The yellow of mimosa is a color that represents
“hope” and “sun-like brightness.”
As I soaked in the bath while gazing at that color,
I felt as if the restlessness in my heart
was slowly unraveling.
From a neuroscience perspective,
it is said that when we become emotional,
a part of the brain called the “amygdala” becomes excited
and reacts with “Danger!”
When you are tired or stressed,
the “prefrontal cortex,” which stops that reaction, doesn't work well,
and you end up having an emotional explosion.
Learning this,
I felt a little relieved.
When I thought about it that way, instead of thinking “I’m no good,”
I was able to think, “Oh, I’m working really hard right now.”
Moms who are always working hard for someone else
might actually need to be kinder to their own hearts.
It’s natural to have an emotional explosion when you’re too tired.
So, before you get angry,
I want you to make “time to be kind to yourself.”Don't you think that you can always put yourself last?I want to gently tell you today:
“You are also a person worth cherishing.”
I feel like the gentle yellow of the mimosais teaching me that.Mimi
