Points for proofreading and improving text with ChatGPT o3
A few days ago, I wrote about text generation: "Points for ChatGPT o3/o4 text generation: How to avoid over-summarizing". This time, it's about proofreading and improvement.
When you ask ChatGPT o3 to proofread or improve something, it sometimes makes it way too short. There are times when I think, "Isn't that a bit too much of an omission?"
Originally, GPT-4.5 is the most suitable for this. However, because the cost is high, the usage limit is strict. It used to be 50 times a week, but lately, I feel like it's been restricted even more than that.
In this article, I will introduce points on how to effectively use o3 for proofreading and improvement instead of GPT-4.5.
Features of ChatGPT o3
Roughly speaking, o3 is an "AI that provides incredibly smart and polite proofreading." The strengths of o3 are its "tenacity in grasping context" and "chain-of-thought reasoning." Even with longer manuscripts, it doesn't lose sight of the main theme and naturally connects foreshadowing and paraphrasing within the text.
However, when proofreading, it is important to give clear instructions not to omit text. Let's look at some concrete examples.
How does proofreading with ChatGPT o3 change things?
I tried giving o3 a slightly redundant text of about 500 characters. The prompt was simply, "Proofread the following text."
Proofread the following text

Yesterday evening, around 6 PM, I was in my living room at home, sitting comfortably on the sofa, facing the TV screen while standing, and I watched the latest episode of a drama series that I have been watching for a long time. This drama series is a work that boasts a fascinating narrative that never gets boring, depicting the protagonist struggling to overcome difficulties, and because the development of the story is so interesting, it brings a strong sense of immersion that makes me forget the time and watch it intently. Furthermore, in this episode, a new character appeared, bringing a situation different from before, and because there were many surprising developments that betrayed the viewer's expectations, there were many important scenes that were particularly memorable. And finally, in the ending part following those important scenes, there was a shocking last scene that approached the core of the story, and at that moment, I held my breath and was about to cry out. After watching, in addition to soaking in the afterglow for a while, I had a fulfilling time where many emotions welled up at the same time, having had a lasting moving experience where that afterglow would remain deeply engraved in my heart without ever disappearing. This series of actions and experiences has a special meaning for me as a small pleasure in my daily life, and for that reason, watching it even by taking the time to do so has become a habit that I cannot stop no matter how many times I watch it.
The proofreading result is as follows.
Around 6 PM yesterday, I sat comfortably on the sofa in my living room at home and watched the latest episode of the drama series. The solid story of the protagonist facing hardships was as fascinating as ever, and before I knew it, I had forgotten the time and was glued to the screen. This time, the appearance of a new character brought a fresh breeze to the story, and developments that betrayed the viewer's expectations followed one after another. Especially toward the end, I held my breath at the shocking last scene that approached the core of the story, almost letting out a cry. The afterglow didn't disappear for a while after watching, and the deep emotion engraved in my heart persisted. This moment is a small pleasure in my daily life, and it has become a habit that I want to take the time to watch again and again.
It became much cleaner, but it seems like the rhythm and content I originally wanted to write might have been lost.
Points to avoid making the text too short
To prevent the "making it too slim" problem that often happens with o3 proofreading, a single phrase in the prompt is effective.
For example, the following prompt can be considered. In addition to "do not cut the text", I also perform a brush-up of the content with "make it 100 points".
For tone and format specifications, I use the same ones as in "Points for ChatGPT o3/o4 text generation: How to avoid over-summarizing".
Please make the following text 100 points while maintaining at least its original length, without cutting almost anything. It is okay to change the expressions somewhat.
Tone: Soft speaking style, polite (desu/masu) form.
Target: Content that a wide range of readers can understand.
Emotion: Please make the reader feel a sense of familiarity.
Format: Keep bullet points to a minimum.
[Most Important] Do not summarize the main text into a short form; adding or expanding information is also OK.

(The redundant text before proofreading from earlier)
The proofreading result is as follows. If you only want to proofread for typos and omissions, I think you can just specify "Please correct only typos and omissions" without specifying tone or score.
Yesterday evening, when the clock pointed to six, I headed to the living room with a feeling of relief at the end of the day. I sank deep into the soft cushion of the sofa and headed to the TV with the remote in my hand. From there, as if time had begun to flow slowly, a long and rich moment of drama appreciation began.
The series I am obsessed with is a work that carefully depicts the protagonist facing numerous difficulties without losing hope, and overcoming them by working together with friends. Every time, while facing a crisis at an exquisite timing, light shines just a little ahead—such developments continue, so I end up leaning forward, thinking, "What will happen next?" Especially in the latest episode, the appearance of a new character greatly shook the human relationships up to now, and as a viewer, I was betrayed in a good way.
Toward the end, in the scene approaching the core, the protagonist's decision became a turning point that greatly moved the entire story, and I held my breath and could only suppress my voice, saying, "Eh, no way!" The afterglow of the shocking last scene did not cool down even after the end credits rolled, and it spread gradually while leaving a warm heat in my heart.
After watching, I gently placed the fragments of emotion I received from the story in my heart, and while thinking about that world, I made tea in the slightly bright night kitchen. I felt like I could still see the stage of the drama beyond the steam, and I couldn't fully return to reality for a while. Such an afterglow is a small luxury that enriches my daily life. By inserting this moment into the gaps of busy days, the feeling of wanting to do my best again tomorrow naturally wells up.
Before I knew it, this drama had become an important habit that I wanted to face by taking the time to watch it again and again. Being encouraged, laughing, being surprised, and sometimes crying at the story through the screen—I felt once again that all of these things are gently supporting my daily life.
Summary
The thing you want to avoid most when refining text is diluting "what you want to write."If you provide careful instructions, ChatGPT o3 can proofread and improve your text while maintaining the rhythm and passion of the speaker.
Conversely, if your instructions are vague, the model tends to choose the "shortest path."
There are three key points this time.
Specify not to cut the word count
Since o3 tends to shorten text, stay ahead of it by saying, "Maintain at least the original length" or "Adding information or expanding is also okay."Convey the tone specifically
Clearly state your preferences, such as "use a soft tone" or "make it understandable for a wide range of readers."Don't skimp on the effort
Don't aim for completion on the first try; it is better to make fine adjustments through back-and-forth interaction, such as "expand a bit more" or "keep this tone."
By doing this, o3 will quickly turn into a reliable partner. If you are struggling with finishing your text, try imitating the prompt examples introduced here first. I hope this article is helpful.
I have written other articles about ChatGPT and o3, so please take a look.
