pp. 86-94
"Fumihiko Otsuki's [1847.12.22-1928.2.17] [in 'Daigenkai' (1932-1937)]
etymological research
analyzes the psychology of naming by ancient people.
The process is very rational and convincing.
...
The story of how he thought about the spelling of 'dojo' (loach)...
When compiling 'Genkai' [1889-1891],
he was first troubled by whether the sound after 'do' in the name of this fish should be 'ji' or 'ji' (kana variation)....
Without knowing the etymology, he settled on 'dojyo'.
After all, it was written as 'dojyao' or 'dozeo',
so it was natural to be confused since it was all over the place,
but this scholar investigated it patiently.
Tomokiyo Takada [1783-1847]
'Matsuya Hikki' [1818-1845]
'Dojo (loach) must mean mud-fish (dorotsuwo).'
The 'doro' in 'dorotsuwo' is mud. 'Tsu' is the same as 'no'.
'Wo' is 'uwo' (fish). It is the 'wo' in 'katsuwo' (bonito).
Therefore, 'dojyo' is essentially a mud fish,
becoming dorotsuwo -> dotsuwo -> dojyo.
I will add for the sake of completeness that
'dozeo' is the sloppy kana usage of the Edo period.
It is famous that the spelling back then was terrible,
but that was probably because the number of people who could write characters suddenly increased.
Besides, most people had no interest in things like kana usage.
The owner of a 'dozeoya' (I write it that way on purpose)
could not possibly be well-versed in such things."
p. 87 'Hydrangeas, Loaches, and Fur Seals'
"The Tokugawa shogunate lasted for fifteen generations, but
not all of those fifteen people
left a vivid impression.
Everyone knows about the first shogun, Ieyasu, of course, but
the second, Hidetada, is only remembered by name.
He seems to have been a loser who was always being scolded
by his great father.
...
The fourteenth, Iemochi,
suddenly feels very real because of Princess Kazunomiya, and
of course, the fifteenth, Yoshinobu,
is as active as the first, Ieyasu.
That man is cool, isn't he?
The way he easily threw away such a large household
is indescribable.
I like him.
Partly because I like the fact that he enjoyed eating pork.
I have long wanted historical novelists
to describe in detail the scene of Yoshinobu eating pork. I would love to read a passage where he eats pork steak, pork sukiyaki (miso-based is best),
or perhaps tonkatsu. I am sure that not only I, but readers would be delighted, so
why don't the masters, mid-career writers, and newcomers take up this good material?
It is unbearable to worry about."
