Lesson 4: Tips for Reading Books
My reading technique
Tear books apart to read them
The relationship between mayonnaise and indexes
What is index reading?

Lesson 5: Tips for Thinking
Let's cultivate 'mysteries'
Don't be shy about established theories
Don't read books in a hurry
Let's go with comparison and analysis
Hypotheses should be bold
There is poetry in thinking
A broad perspective is important
Lesson 6: Tips for Writing
Let's complete the writing in our heads
What are the characteristics of the Japanese language?
When honorifics hinder communication
The importance of rhetoric
From the beginning to the conclusion
Let's write with something to say
"Let me give you an example of 'comparison and analysis.'
It was when I wrote my thesis on Emperor Go-Toba.
I had always liked Emperor Go-Toba's waka poetry.
However, I had never thought about
writing a book about it."
Then, I received a request from Chikuma's 'Selection of Japanese Poets'
to write a thesis on Emperor Go-Toba.
It was said to be 'a recommendation from
Kenkichi Yamamoto-sensei [1907.4.26-1988.5.7].'
At that time, I was just
in the middle of writing a long novel called
'The Rebellion of One,'
and while thinking, 'If I do this, the novel will be delayed,'
I couldn't help but want to write it, so
I accepted it."
So, in between writing the novel,
I read Emperor Go-Toba's waka and the Shin Kokinshu in detail.
I didn't just read them,
I read them while comparing them in my head with Fujiwara no Teika's waka.
Then,
I noticed that the tendencies of the two poets' poems were subtly different.
While thinking about that subtle difference,
I realized the difference in character between
the Emperor's waka and the professional poet's waka.
In other words, the difference between court poetry and pure poetry.
As the origin of Emperor Go-Toba's court poetry,
there is poetry as social interaction,
and even further back, there is ritual poetry.
Isn't that the original way of poetry?
The poems of an Emperor who is not a professional poet
might be the essence of poetry,
that is the way of thinking I arrived at.
Many of the theses on Emperor Go-Toba until then
often had ideas like, 'The Emperor's waka is amateur art, and Teika's waka is true art,' or
'The Emperor was jealous of the high artistic quality of Teika's waka and Teika's talent, so he had him confined,'
like the art-for-art's-sake movement of the Taisho era,
romanticizing artists,
and there was an aspect of disparaging Emperor Go-Toba's waka
in order to contrast it with that.
I, rather,
thought that while waka poetry was increasingly becoming a literary work,
it was Emperor Go-Toba who valued the nature of waka as court poetry,
and that this was the reason
the conflict between Emperor Go-Toba and Fujiwara no Teika arose.
That is what I thought.
Once I had formed that hypothesis,
I read Emperor Go-Toba's treatise on poetry, "Go-Toba-in no Gokuden,"
and found that it contained things that fit perfectly.
If I had only looked at Emperor Go-Toba's waka poetry,
this kind of idea would not have been born.
This, too, is thanks to comparison and analysis.
