"Letting cherry blossoms flow down the Yoshino River,
Letting autumn leaves flow down the Tatsuta River,
Dropping a letter from above the bridge,
Letting our two names flow in the water."
(Matsu no Ha)
Saiichi Maruya
This is 'Matsu no Ha' that I chose,
and it is a collection of songs from the Edo period.
This four-line poem is a model of 'ki-sho-ten-ketsu' (introduction, development, twist, conclusion).
If I were to translate it in my own way,
"What is flowing down the Yoshino River?
Cherry blossoms.
And down the Tatsuta River?
Autumn leaves.
Then what are we two letting flow?
It must be our scandalous reputation."
That is the kind of meaning it has.
It is nothing more than wordplay,
but the beauty of the structure and the cleverness of the playfulness make me feel quite good.
Hirohiko Okano
It feels like posing a riddle and then solving it.
Makoto Ooka
'Matsu no Ha' is from the early Edo period, but
if you look at something like the Muromachi period's 'Kanginshu',
it breaks things down sharply,
and some rather dangerous lyrics start to appear.
Edo is much smoother
and more subdued..."

"Masashi Miura
How about the question of whether it is easier to get along with Sei Shonagon
than it is to get along with Murasaki Shikibu?
Shigeru Kashima
I think Sei Shonagon would be interesting as a friend,
but there is no doubt that she is a rather unpleasant person.
Saiichi Maruya
I would choose to get along with Sei Shonagon (laughs).
Miura
Murasaki Shikibu would be a lot of work, wouldn't she.
Kashima
It would be terrible if you were written about by her.
Even if you were thoroughly criticized in Sei Shonagon's essays,
it wouldn't hurt that much, but
if you were treated as a character in a novel, that would be the end.
Maruya
That's why Fujiwara no Michinaga is great.
He would hire someone like that to write a novel, wouldn't he?
It's like a major newspaper president bringing in a female writer,
telling stories of his past experiences with women,
and asking her to serialize it over ten years.
It's amazing.'
