Weekly Review (9/29 - 10/4)
October has finally arrived, and before we knew it, there is less than three months left in the year.
The midsummer heat has faded, mornings and evenings feel cooler, and I finally feel that autumn has truly arrived.
There are many ways to spend autumn, such as reading, sports, eating, and art; how are you spending yours?
I would like to look back on a week where I felt that sense of autumn.
1. The 'Barrier to Independence' Faced by Welfare Recipients: The Distorted Reality of Medical Certificate Costs
I frequently post articles on the theme of public assistance, and this time I am covering a case that could be called a 'distortion'.
When seeing news about welfare fraud, some people may have negative feelings toward those receiving public assistance, but the majority are people who are working hard every day toward 'independence'.
However, on the other hand, there are mechanisms that hinder 'independence,' and there is a reality that sometimes crushes the spirit of those struggling.
2. The 'Difficulty of Living' That Spreads Between the Bustle of the Stock Market and Our Daily Lives
I think you often see reports on stock market indices on TV news. However, for those who do not own stocks, it probably feels like a distant story.
Also, it is often said that when stock prices are high, the economy improves, but considering the recent rise in prices, I think there are quite a few people who do not feel that way.
I dug deeper into that sense of discomfort.
3. The Census Has Arrived: Proposals for the Future Considering Its Challenges and Reliability
The census, which happens every five years, began last month. I think some of you have already received the census envelope.
However, I think it is difficult to imagine how this relates to real life, and some may feel it is just like a survey.
I touched upon the significance of the census and examples of its use.
4. How Can We Protect Japan's Research Capabilities? ~💡 The Immeasurable Power of 'Basic Science' Where Intellectual Curiosity Opens the Future
The other day, the news mentioned that the Nobel Prize announcement was approaching, and there was talk about who among the Japanese might win.
This showed excitement about how amazing Japanese research is, but I wonder if we will be able to keep saying that in a few years or ten years.
I created this with that question in mind.
5. How to ensure that the lifestyle of common-law marriage is not disadvantageous
I believe some people viewed "separate surnames for married couples" as one of the issues in the 2025 summer House of Councillors election.
There are various opinions on this sensitive topic, but a certain number of people choose common-law marriage because they cannot have separate surnames.
Some may think, "Isn't that the same as living together?" but there are those who have no choice but to choose common-law marriage, and those who choose it intentionally; the backgrounds are diverse.
I have highlighted such common-law marriages, focusing on the differences from legal marriages.
Thank you for reading this week as well.
