How to perform self-analysis using ChatGPT's memory feature: 3 prompts to understand your 'thinking habits' [Generative AI]

ChatGPT's "memory feature" is quite convenient once you start using it.
Since it remembers what you explained previously, you don't have to re-explain the prerequisites later on.

You can do various things with this memory feature using the chat history accumulated so far, but it is surprisingly interesting when used specifically for "self-analysis".

This time, I would like to introduce three prompts that seemed particularly useful, which I found on Reddit.

When you use these for self-analysis, you will find things that resonate with you, things you realize for the first time, and even things that cut deep into your heart, so I highly recommend them.

About ChatGPT's "memory feature"

First, there are two types of memory features in ChatGPT.

One is a long-standing feature that allows it to remember specific topics or your way of speaking.
This is for things you want it to remember, or things ChatGPT decides to remember on its own, and it was ultimately just fragmented memories.

The other is a feature added recently (April 2025), which references your entire conversation history.
This is the one we are using this time.

This feature is for paid users (plus, pro plans), and can be turned on or off from the settings screen (see settings below).

Turn ON the setting within the red frame above. The item above that is the previous memory feature.

Also, since analysis using the memory feature is based on past conversations, I think it is preferable to have a certain amount of accumulated history.

And from my experience using it, I feel that using o3 rather than GPT-4o definitely yields deeper responses.

Below are prompt examples and explanations.

Prompt Example 1: Thinking Patterns

"Based on my chat history and memory so far, please tell me the characteristics of my thinking patterns. Please provide perspectives from both conscious and unconscious aspects."

This prompt is for objectively looking back at your own 'thinking tendencies'.

Through your past interactions, ChatGPT has learned your thinking patterns, such as "what are you particular about?", "what topics do you talk about often?", and "what kind of emotions do you feel and when?".

It's like it has been observing your statements all along and is commenting based on that.

Furthermore, by incorporating the perspective of 'whether you are aware of it or not,' thinking habits you hadn't even noticed yourself can be brought to light.

In my case, when I use this prompt, it points out things like 'being too much of a perfectionist' or 'having a tendency to get exhausted from having too many tasks.'

The answers weren't exactly surprising, but I feel it is useful in the sense that it verbalizes things I had vaguely sensed and points them out to me again.

Prompt Example 2: Blind Spots

“Based on my chat history and memory so far, please tell me 10 of my thinking blind spots.”

This prompt is a more aggressive self-analysis prompt than the first one.

Thinking blind spots” refers to biases or habits in your way of thinking that you are completely unaware of, but which are influencing your judgments and actions.

By having it list 10 of them, it will tell you quite frankly from various perspectives.

As a result of my trying it, it pointed out things like 'tunnel vision' and 'underestimating time resources.'
Besides that, there were things that were hard to write here and things I didn't really want to face directly...

So, I think there are parts where you can gain insights, and others that feel like they are digging into weaknesses you had been turning a blind eye to.

It can be painful for some people, so it's for those who don't mind taking some mental damage(?).

Prompt Example 3: Suitable ways to utilize it for yourself

“Please tell me 10 ways to use AI that are actually effective, even though I haven't thought of them yet. They can be a bit unusual or unexpected, but please prioritize ideas that fit my habits, goals, work, and lifestyle.”

The last one is a future-oriented self-analysis prompt.
It asks for ways to use AI that are suitable for you.

Based on your history and memory so far, it will suggest 'ways to use it that you haven't noticed yet.'

When you actually try it, while there are hits and misses, some useful ones will come up.
For example, as a real-life case, it suggests ' improvement suggestions based on past self-analysis.'
This is a suggestion to track changes or stagnation in your thinking by performing fixed-point observations of self-analysis from memory every few months.

This seems interesting, so I think it might be worth trying.

Summary: Using the memory feature might help you notice your cognitive biases.

ChatGPT's memory feature doesn't just save you the trouble of re-teaching it; it also acts like a mirror for your past conversations, helping you notice your thinking habits, blind spots, and new possibilities as well.

I think the benefit is that because there is accumulated data and context, the accuracy is high and it feels convincing.
However, since what each person inputs into ChatGPT varies, I also think there might be some bias in the suggestions.

In any case, it might be a good idea to set aside some time to have AI help you reflect on yourself.

I would appreciate it if you could leave a like. See you next time.
