So, the new feature added this time is 'Video Overview'.
This is a groundbreaking feature where AI automatically creates an explanatory video from uploaded materials, and it seems like it will be especially useful in school settings!
※It can only create English versions for now, so it's not very useful at this moment, but there's no harm in preparing for it now. I expect it will support Japanese in the near future.
Studio Panel Upgrade
Before explaining the 'Video Overview,' let's cover the update to the 'Studio' panel.
With this update, the 'Studio' panel has evolved significantly. Previously, you could only create one of each Studio output (audio overview, mind map, report, etc.) per notebook, but now you can create and save multiple items of the same type. This enables the following use cases:
Multilingual Content:In a notebook shared worldwide, you can create several audio overviews in different languages to spread information globally.
Role-Specific Information:In a team notebook, you can create customized audio or video overviews for each member, saving time and effort.
Efficient Learning:For exam preparation, you can create multiple mind maps or video overviews specialized for each chapter to progress smoothly.
At the top of the Studio panel, there are four tiles: Audio Overview, Video Overview, Mind Map, and Report, accessible with a single click.

The content you create is displayed in a list, making it easy to manage. Furthermore, multitasking is supported, so you can listen to audio while viewing a mind map or checking a report simultaneously.
What is the 'Video Overview' feature?
The 'Video Overview' feature, which didn't exist before, has arrived!
It's a new feature that uses NotebookLM's powerful AI to turn complex information into visually easy-to-understand videos.
While the previous 'Audio Overview' was convenient for absorbing information while multitasking, this is perfect for deeply understanding difficult concepts that require visuals.
Overview and Features of the Function
The AI generates a slide video with narration from uploaded documents, slides, charts, and more.
The AI host creates new visuals and automatically incorporates images, diagrams, quotes, and figures from the original materials to provide explanations.
It is highly effective in situations where visuals are important, such as explaining data, demonstrating processes, or concretizing abstract concepts.
The main features are:
Narration-accompanied slides:The AI narrates with a natural voice and combines it with visual slides.
Automatic citations:Automatically picks up images, diagrams, quotes, and figures from the materials and places them in the video.
Customization allowed:Like the audio overview, it can be adjusted to meet user needs. It supports everything from general requests like 'I don't know this topic at all, so please make the diagrams in the paper easy to understand' to specific ones like 'I am an expert in X and my team is doing Y, so please focus on Z.'
Multilingual:It's only in English for now, but more languages are planned to be added soon.
Creation time:Please allow about 20 minutes.
Creation Limit: It seems that free users are limited to 3 times per day.
How to use 'Video Explanations' in the classroom
This feature holds promise for various uses in educational settings. It should not only help students with their learning but also make teachers' work easier.
Student Learning Support
Flipped Classroom: Create explanation videos of lesson content in advance for students to study at home. Use class time for deep discussion, practice, and individual guidance to significantly deepen understanding.
Individual Optimization: Provide custom videos tailored to the student's level. For example, detailed videos focusing on difficult concepts or advanced versions for students who are ahead, perfectly meeting everyone's needs.
Promoting Review: Videos can be watched repeatedly at any time. Convenient for home or commuting, and the combination of visual and auditory input is effective for retaining long texts or complex concepts. Combined with audio summaries, it also supports audio-based learning, allowing for diverse styles.
Global with Multiple Languages: With support for over 50 languages, you can provide native language materials in multicultural classrooms. It allows for equal learning without language barriers and is also great as material for foreign language study.
Study Guides and Report Help: Upload research materials and summarize them in a video to grasp them efficiently. Increase effectiveness by linking generated guides (quizzes, glossaries) with Quizlet.
Improving Teacher Work Efficiency
Lesson Preparation: Upload lecture recordings, textbooks, or papers to generate videos that explain complex concepts simply. Reducing preparation time allows for higher quality lessons and more time with students.
Material Summarization: Quickly grasp the big picture by summarizing uploaded materials and extracting keywords. Finding key points for lessons becomes easier.
Creation Examples
Video from textbook screenshot [6th Grade Social Studies: The Fall of the Edo Shogunate: English Version]
I made this without any instructions.
It is an English narration, but you can understand the content by setting the subtitles to Japanese.
Video from textbook screenshot [6th Grade Social Studies: The Fall of the Edo Shogunate: Japanese Version]
It is output in Japanese.
For this, I entered the following instructions in 'Customize'.
【指示】
ナレーションの音声は全て日本語に翻訳してください
【必須ルール】
すべて日本語に翻訳して解説するIt doesn't seem to work perfectly every time, but it does add Japanese narration.
It gives you an idea of what it will be like when the Japanese version is released.
Video from textbook text [4th Grade Japanese: 'White Hat']
I did not set it to Japanese.
Please enjoy it in English.
If you don't add subtitles, it could also be used for English learning.
Create from 'Find Sources' [Instruction: 'About NotebookLM video explanations' - Convert to video]
If you upload the video to 'Google AI Studio' and ask for an audio translation, it will output as follows.
### Google's NotebookLM: The AI Video Revolution
NotebookLM, an AI-powered note-taking tool developed by Google, is a groundbreaking tool that organizes and summarizes uploaded materials based on AI, and answers user questions. It has been announced that a new 'Video Overview' feature will be added to NotebookLM, which is attracting attention. This feature takes traditional text-based summaries and audio overviews a step further by generating videos in a slideshow format with narration based on the content of the materials.
#### Solving Challenges in the Modern Era of Information Overload
In modern society, many people are drowning in a flood of information. Whether it is meeting minutes, a large number of research papers, or 'read later' tabs piling up, it is difficult to fully understand and utilize the content even if you spend a lot of time on input. Creating traditional presentations has also been a task that requires a great deal of time and effort, such as extracting key points, designing slides, and preparing narration.
#### Main Functions and Features of NotebookLM
NotebookLM was developed to solve these challenges. The main features are as follows:
* **Supports diverse sources:** You can import various formats of data as sources, including Google Docs, PDFs, text files, website URLs, and even YouTube videos and audio files.
* **Source-based answers:** Because NotebookLM generates answers based only on the content of the uploaded materials, the risk of 'hallucinations' (a phenomenon where plausible but false information is generated) seen in general generative AI is low, providing highly reliable information. Sources are clearly cited in the answers, allowing users to immediately check the original materials.
* **Automatic summarization and organization:** Even for long documents, AI instantly analyzes the content, extracts important points, and creates a summary. This allows users to grasp the overall picture in a short time.
* **Audio Overview:** A feature that allows you to listen to the content of the materials like a podcast. It can be used for 'learning while doing' things like commuting.
#### Innovation in Learning and Sharing through the Video Overview Feature
The newly added 'Video Overview' feature further develops these functions and has the potential to significantly change how we learn and share information.
* **Automatically generate videos in 3 steps:**
1. **Add sources:** Upload relevant documents or files.
2. **Customize:** Specify the target audience, learning goals, etc.
3. **Generate:** AI automatically creates a slideshow video with narration.
* **Promoting visual understanding:** Complex content that is difficult to understand with text alone can be expressed visually in a video format with slides and charts, enabling more intuitive understanding.
* **Efficient information sharing:** The generated videos can be used in various situations, such as presentations at meetings, information sharing within teams, or as educational content.
#### Applications for Business, Education, and Personal Productivity Improvement
NotebookLM is expected to be used in various fields.
* **Business:** Significantly improves work efficiency, such as meeting preparation, creating materials for new employee training, and repurposing marketing content.
* **Education:** Students can create interactive study guides from lecture notes, and researchers can understand complex papers in a short time.
* **Personal productivity:** Useful for organizing personal projects, such as travel planning or learning a new hobby.
#### Future Outlook and Points to Note
The 'Video Overview' feature currently only supports English, but multilingual support is planned for the future. Also, at this time, there is no dedicated mobile app, and it is used via a web browser. The free plan has limitations on the number of videos that can be generated.
This new technology promotes the democratization of knowledge and opens up a future where everyone can easily access complex topics. NotebookLM can be called a truly 'revolutionary' tool that has the potential to fundamentally change how we interact with information.
