Climate change drives our commitment to cut emissions and lead with sustainable action.

We recognize the essential role of the mining sector in supporting the energy transition and embrace our responsibility to invest continuously in technology and innovation to reduce our carbon footprint and support the decarbonization of our value chain.

At Vale Base Metals (VBM), we understand that how we mine is just as important as what we mine.

Our customers, partners, communities, and investors, expect us to do our part to address climate change and reduce our emissions.

That is why our climate agenda is designed to create and protect business value, by operating responsibly and reliably.

Our climate agenda is built on four pillars:

Reduce

Inspiring efficiency and innovation across all operations. Minimizing energy use and waste. Taking actions that lower costs and directly improve productivity, promoting operational excellence.

Replace

Bringing down our GHG emissions by embracing renewable energy and low  carbon fuels where feasible, and identifying alternative sources of heat and reductants for our processes.

Remove & Restore

For the toughest, hard-to-abate emissions, we will invest in high-quality offsets: projects that restore landscapes, reforest, and support regenerative agriculture. These initiatives create jobs, strengthen community relationships, and enable growth.

Resilience

Adapt our operations and communities to a changing climate by measuring climate risks and advancing actions to protect our operations, landscapes, and communities from floods, fires, and other climate impacts.

Reducing Emissions

We strive to reduce both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) and to contribute effectively to a low-carbon economy.

We work to produce low carbon products by establishing actionable plans and climate resilient pathways for our operations and our value chain. We measure and mitigate the risks caused by a changing climate and develop strategies to enhance the resilience and adaptation of our operations, communities and landscapes in which we operate under a changing climate.

Vale S.A. Goals and Progress

We contribute to Vale S.A. goals through projects that expand the use of alternative energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Scope 1 and 2

Reduce emissions from 2017 by 33 per cent in 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050

Scope 3

Reduce emissions from 2018 by 15 per cent in 2035

Renewable

100 per cent of electricity consumption from renewable sources

2024 GHG Emissions

Energy Efficiency

VBM has invested in modern, automated, georeferenced fixed assets (trucks, drills, machinery and equipment) that use radar and artificial intelligence. In addition to gains in safety and energy efficiency, these assets generate sustainability benefits due to reduced fuel consumption and increased component life.

100 per cent

We set a goal to source 100 per cent renewable electricity in Brazil by 2025 and achieved that goal in 2023, two years ahead of schedule.

60 per cent

Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) reduce and optimize energy consumption. Installed on the blower motors in our Kiln Plant in Clydach, Wales, VSDs reduced the plant’s electrical usage by 60 per cent in 2024.
