[Northern Alps] Mt. Norikura | A 19km hike from Sanbondaki, enjoying peak-bloom bleeding hearts and a quiet morning
I hadn't planned on heading to Mt. Norikura.
It was a day that came about after changing my plans at the last minute.
Arriving at the summit just before the first bus, I found a quiet morning on Mt. Norikura.
And coloring the mountain trail were bleeding hearts, just reaching their peak bloom.
Although the hike began with a change of plans, it turned into a day where I could fully enjoy Mt. Norikura in summer.
Introduction
Mt. Norikura is a highly popular mountain in Japan, accessible by bus to near its 3,026m summit.
On the other hand, if you hike from the Sanbondaki parking lot, you can fully savor the true charm of Mt. Norikura, from the quiet forest zone to the timberline, alpine plants, and wide ridgelines.
This time, I changed the mountain I had originally planned to climb and headed to Mt. Norikura, which my companion had not yet climbed.
In this article, I will introduce:
The state of the Sanbondaki route
The blooming status of the bleeding hearts
Points of caution on the mountain trail
The charm of Mt. Norikura felt while walking
based on my actual experience.
What is Mt. Norikura?
Mt. Norikura is a volcanic group in the southern part of the Northern Alps, straddling Nagano and Gifu prefectures, with its highest peak being Kengamine (3,026m).
Because it is accessible by bus to Tatamidaira, it is known as one of the relatively easier 3,000m peaks to climb in Japan.
On the other hand, on routes that involve walking from Sanbondaki or Kurumigahara, you can slowly enjoy the unique scenery of Mt. Norikura, such as quiet forests, alpine plants, and vast volcanic terrain.
In summer, it is rich in alpine plants such as bleeding hearts and Aleutian avens, and many hikers and photography enthusiasts visit.
I have hiked this trail several times myself, and it is one of my favorite mountains because it shows a different face with every season, no matter how many times I visit.

Overall Course Map

Although the route from Sanbondaki has a significant elevation gain, the trail is well-maintained.
Since you can start walking earlier than the first bus, it is also appealing to be able to stand at the summit during a time when there are few people.
Reason for choosing this mountain
I had originally planned to hike a different mountain.
I had already booked the bus and was making preparations, but I felt a strong desire to connect another peak to the hike, so I decided to revise my plan.
However, that plan would require an overnight stay, so I decided to postpone it until next year.
That is why I chose Mt. Norikura.
It was a mountain my companion had not yet climbed, and it was also the perfect time to see the bleeding hearts in full bloom.
Based on my previous experience hiking there, I knew that if I started at 5:00 AM, I could reach the summit before the people arriving on the first bus.
This time, too, I wanted to enjoy the quiet morning on Mt. Norikura.
With that thought in mind, I began my hike.
Course details and impressions
Sanbondaki Parking Lot to Kurigahara
The morning forest zone was very quiet.
From the very start, many flowers welcomed us, such as pyrola, bunchberry, and Turk's cap lily.
We took a break at Kurigahara Sanso.
There were many people cycling up on road bikes, which made me realize how popular this place is.

Kurigahara to Katanokoya
Once you pass the tree line, the view opens up all at once.
Alpine plants like white avens and lousewort appeared one after another, and our walking pace naturally slowed down.
By the time we reached Katanokoya, there were still few people from the first bus, and it was a very quiet time.

Kengamine
I arrived at the summit early, just as planned.
Unfortunately, it was shrouded in mist, but I was able to enjoy the uncrowded summit at a leisurely pace.
And then there were the bleeding hearts, which I was most looking forward to this time.
They were blooming in abundance along the trail and were at their peak.
I even encountered white bleeding hearts, which made me stop in my tracks more than once.

Descent
I was tired, so I thought about taking the bus down from Tatamidaira.
However, when I tried to book via the QR code...
To my surprise, every bus was fully booked (lol).
I had no choice but to hike down.
As I did, the mist gradually cleared, and the blue sky began to spread out.
The scenery of Mt. Norikura was completely different from the morning.
Perhaps it was a reward for walking all the way to the end.

Reflections
This day began with a change of plans.
Instead of a "mountain I couldn't go to," it became a "mountain I could walk because it was today."
Thinking of it that way, I am reminded once again that the joy of hiking isn't just about following the plan.
Mt. Norikura, which was wrapped in mist in the morning, showed me blue skies by the time I descended.
And the bleeding hearts blooming all over the trail.
It was a sudden change of plans, but there was scenery that could only be encountered on this day.
The mountains always have scenery that they only show to those who walk them.
I am grateful for another day like this.
Conclusion
Focusing on the mountains of Shizuoka,
I walk the ridgelines every weekend.
Rather than flashy mountains,
I prefer quiet mountains, deep mountains, and hikes where I have to read the conditions.
