[Short Short] The Gentle Typhoon

I keep a typhoon as a pet. It's small enough to fit in the palm of my hand.

When Typhoon No. 8 passed through the city where I live, I rescued it after it strayed from its path and was wandering around.

Perhaps it was wary at first, as it ransacked my room and soaked the floor. I watched over the rampaging typhoon gently and let it do as it pleased.

After a while, it seemed to have gotten it out of its system, so I gently cupped the typhoon, which had been huddled on the floor, in my palms. The typhoon twitched for a moment, but soon began to breathe softly as if it felt safe.

Now, it runs around on my palm and sends a breeze my way like a handheld fan. I named it Hachi.

The seasons turned in the blink of an eye, and after the long summer passed, a short autumn arrived. Lately, Hachi hasn't been its energetic self. It has shrunk to about half its size.

"Hey, Hachi. What's wrong?"

"Typhoons can only live in warm places."

My father said this while looking at Hachi with sad eyes.

I tried placing Hachi on a hand warmer and turning up the heat, but Hachi only kept getting smaller.

Just then, an unseasonable typhoon arrived. Amidst the raging wind and rain, I climbed to the roof of my apartment building. I held Hachi, who was curled up small in my palm, high up toward the sky.

Hachi shivered for a moment, then gently blew a breeze against my face. As the warm wind softly fluttered my eyelashes, Hachi ascended into the sky.

As the typhoon passed, the thick clouds overhead moved slowly, opening a large window of blue sky. The sunlight that shone through felt warm, like the end of summer, for just an instant against my skin amidst the cold air that hinted at winter.

End

I found it quite fun to ask an AI to create title images. But sometimes I think it takes more time than writing the story itself. So, I decided to write at least one more story instead, and said goodbye to image generation for now.

It's kind of human and funny that as technology evolves and we can do more, it ends up taking even more of our time.

I participated in Tara-ha-kani-sama's Weekly Short Short [The Gentle Typhoon].
