[Excerpt] "The Only Happiness in the World"
Good morning!
It's time for Monday's happiness research 😊
Hello, fellow happiness researchers!
well-being✨
Thinking about "sustainable happiness"
What exactly is
Seligman's perspective?
Let's take a little peek~♪
Today, an [excerpt] from his book
⭐️Let's explore Seligman's ideas!
A book written about the secrets of positive psychology
Written by Martin Seligman
"Authentic Happiness"
It is difficult for the average person to read such specialized books...💧
An excellent book that summarizes
many of those difficult psychology textbooks👇
"50 Psychology Classics"
by Tom Butler-Bowdon, translated by Keiichi Kometani
(It is a recommended book✨)
From here
I would like to introduce Seligman's ideas🤗
-Excerpt from the book-
⭐️If you cultivate virtues, you can become happy
According to Seligman,
true happiness and life satisfaction
are obtained by slowly nurturing "virtues."
"Virtue" consists of universal virtues found in every culture and in the literature of every era.
These are common universal virtues.
Virtues include, in particular,
wisdom and knowledge, courage, love and humanity, justice, temperance, and spirituality.
To acquire such virtues,
it is necessary to cultivate and nurture personal character strengths such as
originality, bravery, integrity, loyalty, compassion, and fairness.
⭐️ You can find happiness by utilizing your strengths
Talent and strength are different things.
Talent is innate, allowing one to perform excellently without conscious effort.
Strengths can be chosen and cultivated.
We are more
moved by those who have achieved something by overcoming great obstacles
than by those who succeed solely on innate ability.
While talent alone merely conveys the contents of one's genes,
virtue and developed talent (by making maximum use of personal strengths)
are what express our humanity.
If you utilize your "special strengths,"
you will gain life satisfaction and authentic happiness.
It is a mistake to spend your life trying to overcome your weaknesses.
Rather, the greatest success and true satisfaction (genuine happiness) in life
come from developing your strengths.
⭐️ Does the past determine future happiness?
If you become convinced that childhood experiences are the cause of your current unhappiness, or if you become timid about the future because of them, you will be wasting your life.
What is important is to develop your own strengths, which are not swayed by childhood experiences or your current environment.
What is important is,
not being swayed by childhood experiences or current circumstances, but developing your own strengths.
⭐️ Gratitude and forgiveness invite happiness
Seligman says that if you dwell on the mistreatment you received in the past and try to express those feelings, you will feel even worse.
Research has proven that for people with Type A behavior patterns (characterized by tension, impatience, and aggression), expressing hostility rather than just feeling it is what causes heart attacks.
The secret to happiness is the Eastern method of calming your mind even when you feel anger, rather than expressing it.
The more you are grateful for people and things, the better you will feel.
The human brain is not designed to erase memories whenever we want.
However, even if you cannot forget, you can forgive.
"Remove the pain from your heart and transform it further."
Trying hard not to forgive the perpetrator does not truly punish them.
On the other hand, if you forgive the other person, you change yourself,
and you will be able to taste satisfaction in life once again.
⭐️ To better understand the heart
Constantly seeking goals for effort and taking action accordingly is
the natural way for humans to live.
The happiness or unhappiness of any given moment is a mostly trivial matter.
What is important is whether or not you choose to develop your inner strengths.
Happiness does not "come from over there";
you need to choose it from your side.
Seligman was a grumpy person until he turned 50, but as he saw numerous pieces of evidence showing the relationship between positive emotions and happiness,
he wanted to try it for himself!
Do not think that you don't know what happiness is,
or that it has nothing to do with you.
Now, the path leading to happiness is more
clearly indicated than ever before.
Whether you become happy or unhappy
is up to you!
