[Puku of the Quiet Shop] A Morning Decorating with a Nordic-Style Christmas Tree | The Cat Who Noticed Immediately
Have you started your winter preparations yet?
At our shop, we decorated with a small tree of lights.
Puku was the first to notice.
The beginning of December. A quiet shop where the crickets are chirping.
When I pushed the shop door open,
the cold air from outside clung to me with a chill.
In the cloudy whiteness that hasn't quite become winter yet,
the scent of Christmas is just beginning to mingle in.
Puku was curled up on the shelf,
and as soon as he saw me, he let out a short "meow."
Even though he was sleepy, he seemed to have woken up for me,
and the tip of his tail was swaying gently. So cute.
During this time of year, Puku
walks around the shop checking the scents,
and shows gestures as if he is "confirming the change of seasons."
Perhaps cats have their own way of preparing for winter.
Today is the day to open the small box that arrived the other day.
Puku came to my side as if it were only natural,
and pressed his nose against the edge of the box.
With a face that seemed to say, "Tell me what you brought. Hmph."
What I took out of the box was
Hairui's Nordic-style branch tree.
It is a battery-operated decoration where the tips of the branches light up one by one.
When I turned on the switch,
a pale light appeared, then another,
as if bringing the early winter twilight of Northern Europe with it.
Puku made his eyes round,
reached out his paw toward the branch tips, then stopped.
He reached out again, then stopped.
That repetition of small hesitation
softens even my heart.
As if waiting for the perfect moment,
Puku licked his front paw,
and groomed his fluffy chest.
It seems this is his signal that "this place isn't bad."
Before long, he settled down at the base of the tree,
and slowly closed his narrow eyes.
The lights reflected softly on his gray fur,
spreading a warmth as if he were beside a bonfire.
As I brewed a steaming cup of tea,
I felt the time flowing through the shop
gradually shifting toward winter.
Outside, the city's shop windows turned red and green,
while inside, the rhythm of Puku's breathing and the lights
matched perfectly,
and that calmness seeped gently into my heart.
Christmas
doesn't need grand decorations.
There is no need to compare it with anyone else's.
Just having a cat curled up
beside a small light like this
is enough to make me feel happy at the start of winter.
