Rather than high functionality, I dare to choose simple tools. The charm of Kaweco Special.

The article I published the other day, "Introduction to my desk setup and pencil case", seems to have reached more people than I imagined. Seeing the view counts and the "likes," I can tell there is a high level of interest in the tools I introduced, and I am very happy about that.

This time, I would like to write about one of my favorites from that list: the Kaweco Special.

The pinnacle of subtraction

Kaweco is a brand with over 140 years of history in Germany. This "Special" series was reconstructed with the motif of a 1930s office pencil.

Its characteristic is thorough simplicity.

Recent high-function mechanical pencils and drafting pens are certainly cool and convenient. However, I dare to be drawn to simple tools without unnecessary decoration.

The octagonal aluminum body has an appearance more like a "single black rod" precisely carved out than a writing instrument. This pencil-like shape naturally fits the fingers and does not roll easily on a desk. Because it is a shape born from function, I feel it has a universal beauty that is not swayed by the times.

A dense "mass"

When you pick it up, you feel the moist texture unique to aluminum and a moderate weight.

Enthusiasts sometimes respectfully describe that feeling, as if it were packed with precise parts to the inside, as a "lump of metal." I interpret this not just as being heavy, but as meaning it has a very high density as a tool and is reliable.

If the Lamy 2000 I introduced before is the pinnacle of resin "unity," this Kaweco is the pinnacle of metal "rigidity." Although the materials are different, there is something in common in the philosophy of using simple, high-quality things for a long time.

Candidates I hesitated over when purchasing

The Kaweco Special is a wonderful pen, but it is by no means cheap as a mechanical pencil. When purchasing, I will also introduce two items I compared based on the same axis of "beauty that excludes decoration." These are more affordable items than the Kaweco Special.

IWI Tool HEX

A model that has the texture of machined aluminum while being in a more accessible price range. In the clean silhouette when the clip is removed, I felt a "purity as a tool" close to that of the Kaweco.

Kaweco Classic Sport (Pencil)

This is a more casual line from the same brand. Although the material changes to resin, you can incorporate Kaweco's iconic design into your daily life more easily.
The rounded design has a different charm than the Special.

Staedtler Hexagonal

This is a pen that feels as if a long-established pencil manufacturer has redefined 'ease of holding' using modern technology. Despite its metal body, it manages to combine the hexagonal shape of a pencil with a texture that feels like it clings to your hand, making it a candidate I struggled with greatly in terms of practicality.

The price is a bit higher, but the Itoya limited edition design is truly wonderful.

In my case, I ultimately couldn't resist this unique appearance and chose the Kaweco Special. I told myself, 'If I think of it as something I'll use for the rest of my life, 6,000 yen is actually cheap!' and bought it on impulse. It's been years since I bought it, but every time I look at it, I think it's still cool, so I'm glad I bought it.

Loving the simple

I believe that what you ultimately choose depends on whether you are convinced by the philosophy behind the tool.

A good tool doesn't get in the way of your thinking; it just sits there and helps you settle your mind a little.

I feel that just having one 'unadorned, authentic' item like the Kaweco Special can turn casual daily writing into a slightly more thoughtful time.
