A set with my beloved Traveler's Notebook
Sophisticated design and a perfect size

An unchanging design that stands the test of time. LAMY 2000

Born in 1966 as the flagship of the Lamy company, the "LAMY 2000" was created with the concept of "a design that will still be relevant in the year 2000." As its name suggests, even in the 21st century, it maintains a perfected aesthetic beauty that feels completely timeless. The fact that its basic design has not been changed even once in over half a century speaks volumes about how "unchanging" this design truly is.

1. Refined and unchanging aesthetic beauty

The greatest appeal of the LAMY 2000 is its design, which is underpinned by "functionalism" that inherits the philosophy of the Bauhaus.

Seamless unity

The body is made of "Makrolon," a reinforced polycarbonate resin. It is crafted so precisely that the seams from the nib to the knock button are barely visible, giving it a clean silhouette as if it were carved from a single piece of material.

Hairline finish that appeals to the sense of touch

The surface features a delicate hairline finish, which provides both a subdued luster and a smooth, tactile feel despite being made of resin. This surface treatment creates an appearance that does not stand out too much in any setting, yet still exudes a definite presence.

A slim form thanks to the pendulum mechanism

Despite being a 4-color pen, it lacks the protruding buttons or bulky barrel typical of multi-color pens. By adopting a "pendulum mechanism" where you face the mark of the color you want to use upward and knock, it maintains a sophisticated, slim line similar to a single-color pen.

A high-quality finish with no visible seams. A simple design that avoids the clutter often found in multi-pens.

2. Expandability to incorporate modern writing performance

This pen is compatible with the "4C standard (D1 standard)," allowing you to replace the refills with the latest domestic or international ones, combining the universality of the design with a modern writing experience. Here is a summary of the representative refills I have actually tested.

1. Mitsubishi Pencil Jetstream (SXR-200)

Synonymous with smooth writing. It is currently my main choice for 4C customization. It is a low-viscosity oil-based ballpoint pen characterized by its low resistance, smooth writing, and quick-drying ink. I have been using Jetstream ever since it was released. It is available in 0.5mm and 0.7mm sizes.

2. Pilot Acroink (BRFS-10)

A masterpiece of low-viscosity oil-based ballpoint ink, similar to Jetstream. It retains just the right amount of the stickiness found in traditional inks, providing a moderate grip that makes it easy to write characters with proper stops, flicks, and sweeps.
It comes in 0.5mm and 0.7mm versions, and only the 0.7mm version is available in green, which is not offered in Jetstream.
Since the LAMY 2000 is a multi-pen with black, red, blue, and green, Acro Ink is the only choice for green.

③ Pilot Hi-Tec-C Slims (LHRF-20C4)

Gel ink. It allows for ultra-fine (0.4mm) writing, which is suitable for detailed entries in planners.
I used it because I wanted to write in fine lines to fit into the narrow columns of my planner. As someone with a heavy hand who finds fine-point oil-based ballpoint pens difficult to write with, I was grateful for this product, but unfortunately, it seems to have been discontinued and is no longer available.

I bought them in bulk, but I only have a few left. The downside is the speed at which gel ink is consumed and the very high frequency of refills required for the thin C4 size.

④ OHTO Needle Point (R-4C5NP)

Like the Hi-Tec, it features a "needle point" shape where the pen tip is as thin as a needle. It uses low-viscosity oil-based ink. It is available in 0.5mm and 0.7mm versions. The 0.5mm version is only available in black. Because of the needle-type tip, it is suitable for writing within the small boxes of a planner.

⑤ Overseas Brands

For those who want to "unify the contents with overseas products" to match the design, Kaweco, rotring, and LAMY are options. I like the ink colors, but I don't use them because I dislike the high-viscosity writing feel.
*I also use my rotring pens with Jetstream refills.

Comparison of Jetstream and Hi-Tec pen tips. The needle shape is very easy to use for writing in the small columns of a planner. If you are interested, please try the refills.

3. Durability

I am currently using my second one. I replaced the first one after about 10 years of use when I dropped it and the joint for the refill replacement cracked. I think it was partly because of how I dropped it, and perhaps there was some deterioration since it is a plastic product.
You might think it would be fragile due to the precise pendulum mechanism, but I used it heavily as my main pen for 10 years, and that part never broke.
Even after 10 years, it makes you think, "I want the same one again." That is how attractive this design is.

4. Future Outlook: Evolution through Mitsubishi Pencil Capital

In 2024, LAMY joined the Mitsubishi Pencil group, and in 2025, the "LAMY safari JETSTREAM inside" was released.

The joy that users have had in "converting the contents to Jetstream" individually is expected to develop further as an official manufacturer specification in the future. It would be wonderful if this timeless design shines even brighter with Japanese technology.

I hope this article is helpful for those looking for a pen they can love across generations.

To love the LAMY 2000 even more.

I have also written an article delving into the origins of the design. Please take a look.

Thank you for reading this far. May your time spent with your planner be wonderful as well. If you could give me a "Like" to show your support, it would be a great source of energy for writing my next article. Thank you.
