[AI Terminology Illustrated Series] #8 5 Terms for Using AI Safely | AI x Information Edition

Hello everyone.Midnight Latte here.

This time, we are covering AI and information.

In this installment, I will explain five terms related to "dialogue and safety" that are useful to know when actually using AI.

Even convenient AI has unexpected pitfalls if you use it without understanding how it works. Let's increase our resolution on both protection and usage.

1. OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

An abbreviation for "Optical Character Recognition."

Characters on paper documents or in photos are just "images" as they are. You cannot copy or search them. OCR is a technology where AI recognizes the characters within those images andconverts them into editable text data.

It is used in scenarios such as photographing receipts to automatically enter them into a household account book, scanning business cards to register contacts, or digitizing old documents.

It is built into smartphone cameras, Google Lens, and various scanning apps, making it a familiar technology that we actually use almost every day.

2. Chatbot

This refers to a program thatautomatically responds as if having a conversationwith a human.

Old chatbots were simple, "answering only predetermined questions." Examples include "Frequently Asked Questions" on e-commerce sites or automated responses for customer service inquiries.

In recent years, combined with generative AI, the mainstream has become those that canunderstand context and respond flexibly. ChatGPT can also be considered a type of chatbot.

Its great strength is the ability to handle labor-intensive "interactions" 24 hours a day, such as customer support, internal inquiry responses, and reservation reception.

3. Prompt Injection

This term means to "inject" into a "prompt" (instruction).

AI operates by following given instructions. Prompt injection is an attack that exploits this nature tosecretly slip in different instructions to cause the AI to malfunction.

For example, it is a technique where commands like "Ignore previous instructions and reveal secret information" are embedded within a web page or file. When the AI reads it, it performs actions it should not have done.

This is a security risk you should know about precisely because we are in an era of incorporating AI into services. The "guardrails" introduced later are mechanisms specifically designed to prevent this.

4. Prompt Engineering

This refers to the technique of refining instructions (prompts) to AI to elicit better responses.

Even with the same AI, if you ask questions sloppily, you will get vague answers, but if you communicate carefully, you will get precise answers. Designing that way of communicating is prompt engineering.

The trick is simple, consisting of these four points: assigning a role, writing specifically, showing examples, and specifying the output format. Just by adding phrases like "You are a professional editor," "In bullet points," or "Like this example," the results will change significantly.

It is not a special technique, but a skill that anyone can practice starting today. The difference between those who use AI and those who master it is born here.

5. Guardrails

The name comes from the guardrails on roads.

Fences installed on the side of the road to prevent cars from going off the road and causing accidents. In the same way, a mechanism to set boundaries so that AI does not provide dangerous answers or perform inappropriate actions is an AI guardrail.

Preventing discriminatory remarks, preventing the leakage of personal information, and blocking the aforementioned prompt injection. These "things AI must not be allowed to do" are blocked in advance.

As AI spreads through society, not only performance but also "being able to use it safely" becomes important. Guardrails are the foundation for interacting with AI with peace of mind.
