Reflections on Participating in the 'Tomo' Project: Building the Future Together

Yesterday, I participated as an operator in the Higashihiroshima Challenge Ship 'Tomo' (Stern), an initiative of Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture!

Students looking toward the future
eagerly engaging with new knowledge.
Witnessing that, I was filled with
passionate energy!

Today, I would like to introduce 'Tomo',
and what this initiative is all about.

What is the Higashihiroshima Challenge Ship 'Tomo'?

First, let me introduce 'Tomo'.
Tomo is a co-creation program based in Higashihiroshima City,
where students and business owners partner up
to tackle real-world challenges at companies.

The program name 'Tomo' (stern),
refers to the rudder or the stern of a ship.
(Coincidentally, this is a term I am very familiar with, having worked in the shipbuilding industry.)

It signifies an important place
that guides the course
and supports the direction of the ship.

Like the“stern”of such a ship,
we help map out the direction
the students should take together.
The program was created
with that meaning in mind.

In this program, university students in Higashihiroshima City
choose one of three fields—Generative AI, SNS management, or design—to learn
so they can act as 'partners to business owners'.
Our company is participating
as instructors for
Generative AIanddesign.

After that, they form teams,
and it is a four-month program
where they take on challenges
at companies in Higashihiroshima City,
applying what they have learned in the 'field'.

Practice in the Generative AI Group: Taking on SNS Video Production

I participated as support for theGenerative AIgroup.
The main things I did with the students were as follows.

• Image generation

• Video generation

• Music generation

• Avatar creation

They learned how to use these AI tools
and created an introductory video for SNS
for the innovation lab 'Miraino+', which served as the venue.

Even so,
although there must have been many tools they were using for the first time,
I was amazed every time by the students'quick grasp of thingsof the material.

Since I usually work with corporate clients,
I clearly felt the
difference in digital adaptabilityof the digital native generation.

"Couldn't we use it like this?"

"Maybe this kind of structure would be good for going viral on social media."

The attitude of researching, thinking, and sharing on their own.
Their output
also inspired me as an instructor.

As for the other groups,
the social media management group learned about PR planning using Instagram and X,
post creation, and short video production,
and together with the generative AI group,
they created a brilliant introductory video
for Miraino+.

The design group learned the 'power to communicate'
by creating flyers and materials using Canva and creating images for social media,
and this time, they created 'original business cards'
for the students to use
during their activities.

Supporting the learning of the future

I sincerely felt that way.

• Providing a 'spark' for new learning

• Creating a 'place for connection' between local companies and young people

• Allowing them to experience a 'place for practice' in the digital age

I felt that
this program is packed
with all of that.

I am truly proud to have been involved in the side that
creates these 'opportunities' and 'sparks.' 😊

I wonder how 'Tomo' will evolve from here,
and what kind of future the participating students will envision.

This month, we will further improve our skills,
and joint activities with companies will begin in October.

In December, a final report meeting will be held
to look back on our efforts,
so I am very much looking forward to it!
