Gift—Embryologist Connecting Lives—Episode 16: Salvation, July 22, 2025 #CreativeAward2025
For the first time in a week, I changed into my dark blue scrubs. As if to awaken my usual senses, I lathered soap and washed up to my elbows. When I entered the laboratory, my fellow embryologists were all gathered. As always, everyone was wearing surgical masks and caps, so I checked their expressions by looking at their eyes.
“Mobue-san.”
Kobayashi murmured with concern, staring at Mio. Mei was standing next to Kobayashi. When Mei caught Mio with her pitch-black eyes, where the pupils were indistinguishable, she murmured, “Welcome back.” I could tell by her crinkling eyes that Mei was smiling.
Mio bowed vigorously.
“I apologize for the trouble caused by my long absence. I’ve cleared my head, so I look forward to working with you all again!”
“Mobue-san, once you’ve finished checking the equipment, please start with the sperm count.”
With his steady presence, Matsui spoke as he always did. A lot had happened, but Mio felt happy to have work entrusted to her like this.
“Yes!”
I peered into the microscope, immersing myself in the microscopic world. It was to count the number of sperm released onto the slide. The sperm moved constantly in random directions. The clicking sound of the counter echoed through the lab. Counting motile sperm is a difficult task. The sperm being counted this time would undergo processing and be used for artificial insemination. Since the concentration must be measured before motility decreases, rapid operation is required.
I counted the sperm quickly. My hands, my fingers, were remembering the technique. There are times when you can be saved by immersing yourself in work. Under her mask, Mio smiled.
“Mobue-san, could I have a word with you?”
After finishing the sperm count, I was prompted by Matsui to enter the staff room. Kawase was seated. Kawase narrowed his eyes slightly and nodded at Mio. When Matsui and Mio sat down, Kawase spoke.
“Mobue-san, how are you feeling?”
“Yes. This past week, I took the time to face myself thoroughly. I went to see someone close to me, and by talking about my feelings, I was able to sort them out. So, I’m okay now.”
“That’s good. You’ve recovered well.”
“Dr. Kawase. I am truly sorry for the terrible things I said back then.”
Mio bowed deeply. Kawase shook his head and then looked into Mio’s eyes.
“The trembling in your eyes and fingertips that I saw right after the incident is gone. I can see that your feelings are stable.”
Matsui nodded next to Kawase.
“Um, were there any repercussions from the incident after that?”
Kawase nodded slowly.
“As expected, there were many inquiries from the media. But I kept the response to a minimum. To ensure it wouldn’t interfere with hospital operations.”
“Mamiya-san, is he, after all…”
“That’s right. It’s unlikely he’ll be found innocent. I hear they are currently investigating various things regarding the future. Regardless, thanks to you and Kobayashi-kun, we avoided the worst-case scenario. Thank you very much.”
Mio nodded quietly and lowered her eyes.
Are you okay, Motai-san?
Matsui leaned forward, turning toward Mine.
Yes. I am fine now.
Mine took a breath and looked ahead.
Even so, I still want to continue witnessing the beginning of life. I truly love this job.
Kawase and Matsui looked at each other, smiled, and nodded.
I don't usually say things like this, but both Matsui and I trust your technique, Motai-san. Mei-san on the front lines also thinks very highly of your work.
Mine was surprised by Kawase's words. Kawase laughed lightly as usual. Matsui crossed his thick arms and stared at Mine.
Motai-san. We want you to continue performing embryo culture work. To get right to it, can you handle Naoko Akazawa's ICSI next week? If the ICSI is successful, I would like you to handle the pre-treatment for the embryo transfer as well. She is a patient who caused a bit of a stir, but she said she wanted to apologize to you. It seems she is going to try treatment once more.
Naoko Akazawa. That was the woman who had grabbed Mine by the collar and cried. Akazawa, too, desperately wanted a child. Despite everything that had happened, Mine still wanted to help Akazawa find happiness. If she could support Akazawa's life through fertility treatment...
I will do it. Please, let me do it.
As Mine stood up vigorously and bowed, Matsui uncrossed his arms, beamed, and nodded.
