山の暮らしの物語41 野猿(やえん) 空飛ぶ焚き木

「お〜い　行くぞ〜」
遠くの山から　父さんの声が聞こえた。

「ほ〜い」
こっちでは、母さんが口に手を当てて大声で応える。
ゆきちゃんは、文ちゃんをかかえ、うんと離れてながめている。

山の奥から家の近くに、太いワイヤーロープが張ってある。
長さは300メートルくらいだろう。

その緩く傾斜したワイヤーにぶら下がった焚き木の束がゆるゆると動き出し
勢いをつけ、うなりを上げて空中を飛んで来た。

焚き木の束は勢いよく斜面に叩きつけられて、あたりに散乱する。
なんとも乱暴なやり方だが、ブレーキがないのでこうなってしまう。

山へ焚き木を採りに行った父さんは
こうやって、家の近くに焚き木の束を下ろすのだった。

台所の煮炊きや風呂などの燃料には、薪や山の柴がなくてはならないのだ。

散乱した焚き木を拾い集めて、納屋に積み上げるのは母さんの仕事だ。
この仕組みを　この家では野猿( ヤエン) と呼んでいた。

本来の野猿は、谷川を挟んだ対岸へ人や荷物を渡すためのものだ。( 注 )

水平に張ったワイヤーロープに吊り下げた屋形に乗って
別に渡された引き綱を人力で操作して進むので
人も荷物も無事に届く。

ゆきちゃんちの野猿は、その変形である。
誰もが、こんな荒っぽい物を使っているわけではないが
この家では重宝していた。

今夜も、母さんはこの柴でご飯を炊き
ゆきちゃんは、お風呂を沸かす。
父さんは暗くなる頃、山を降りて来る。

1才のお誕生日を過ぎた文ちゃんは、よちよち歩きに忙しい。

子守の姉やさんは、もうお家に帰ったので
一家は、家族4人の暮らしに戻った。

猿が木のつるを伝って移動する様子に似ている事から
「野猿　ヤエン」と呼ばれ 今は「観光用」になっている。

Mother responded loudly, cupping her hands around her mouth.
Yuki-chan watched from a safe distance, holding Bun-chan.

A thick wire rope was stretched from deep in the mountains to near the house.
It was probably about 300 meters long.

A bundle of firewood hanging from the gently sloping wire began to move slowly, then gained momentum and flew through the air with a roar.

The bundle of firewood slammed violently into the slope and scattered all over.
It was a rough method, but without brakes, this was the only way.

Father, who had gone to the mountains to gather firewood, would lower the bundles to the house this way.

Firewood and brushwood from the mountains were essential for cooking in the kitchen and heating the bath.

It was Mother's job to gather the scattered firewood and stack it in the shed.
In this house, they called this system "Yaen" (Wild Monkey).

Originally, a Yaen is used to transport people or cargo to the opposite bank across a mountain stream. (*)

By riding in a wooden cage suspended from a horizontally stretched wire rope and manually pulling a separate guide rope, both people and cargo can arrive safely.

The Yaen at Yuki-chan's house was a variation of that.
Not everyone used such a rough contraption, but it was very useful for this family.

Tonight, Mother will cook rice with this brushwood, and Yuki-chan will heat the bath.
Father will come down from the mountain around dusk.

Bun-chan, who has passed her first birthday, is busy toddling around.

Since the babysitter has already gone home, the family has returned to their life of four.

(*) Original Yaen

It is called "Yaen" (Wild Monkey) because it resembles the way monkeys move along tree vines. Nowadays, they are used for tourism.
