Level Up Your AI Usage! The Secrets to Mastering 'Conversational' vs. 'Long-Form' Prompts

Hello, I am Pokego, and I research how to write high-quality articles using generative AI.

You may have understood that "prompts are important" for mastering AI, but...

"But how should I actually write them?"
"Just copy-pasting templates limits how I can use them..."

Do you feel this way?

I felt the same way at first.

I would just pick up prompts I saw on social media and copy-paste them.
The idea of "thinking up my own prompts" never occurred to me.
It just seemed kind of difficult...

However, while learning prompt engineering and repeating trial and error, I arrived at one simple fact.

That is, there are broadly two styles of interacting with AI.

One is the "conversational style" of continuing short exchanges. The other is the
"long-form prompt" where you make a request all at once.

Once I understood how to use these two styles, I became able to utilize AI for various purposes, not just writing.

And actually, the "prompt templates" I provide in my community are made by combining these two styles!

This time, I would like to share with you all how to effectively switch between the "conversational style" and "long-form prompts."

Please use this as a reference!

[Conversational Style] Let's start by "chatting" with AI!

If you brace yourself to 'write a prompt' right away, you'll find yourself stuck before you even begin.

So, first, try thinking of it this way. AI is your
partner for 'bouncing ideas around'.

Forget about complex instructions for a moment, and try talking to the AI in short phrases, just as you would when consulting a friend or colleague.

This is the first style: 'Conversational Style'.

■ 'Conversational Style' is useful in these situations!

(1) When you haven't decided what to write yet

'What kind of theme would be good for a new blog post?'
'That's interesting! Within that, is there an angle on XX that would make readers even more interested?'

Like this, as you keep rallying with the AI, perspectives and ideas you wouldn't have thought of on your own sometimes just pop out.

It really feels like having an excellent partner to bounce ideas off of.

(2) When your goal is still vague

'I want to write an introductory article for a new product, what kind of structure would be good?'
'I see. Then, how about starting with the secret story behind its development?'

By consulting with the AI, you can gradually clarify the outline.
It's like drawing a sketch together on a blank canvas.

This conversational style is not for seeking an 'answer,' but a time to 'search' for what you 'want to do' together with the AI.

Don't try to produce a perfect answer right away; enjoy this creative process itself.

I believe this is the shortest path to expanding the scope of your AI usage.

[Long-Form Prompts] Once you get used to it, let the AI 'take care of it'!

Once you get used to 'chatting' with the AI and what you want to do becomes clear.

Let's move on to the next step.

The AI here is a “brilliant assistant.”

And the prompt you write becomes the “perfect request form” for that assistant.

This is the second style: “long-form prompts.”

“Given this background, for this audience, write about this, in this format.”

Convey your intent accurately in a single instruction and ask for high-quality work all at once.

This is the true value of long-form prompts.

■ Long-form prompts are incredibly powerful in these situations!

(1) When you have a clear idea of what you want to write

When you want to create text in the same format every time, such as for articles, product descriptions, or social media posts.

Once you create a long-form prompt, you can generate high-quality text at overwhelming speed by just making minor adjustments.

(2) When you want to stabilize quality

It is also ideal when you want to ensure the same quality of output regardless of who uses it or when.

This “reproducibility” becomes a major weapon, especially when writing as a team.

Yes, the “prompt templates” I provide in my community are exactly this.

Long-form prompts are a truly powerful tool for accurately conveying your expertise and preferences to the AI, ensuring it “executes” tasks with consistent quality.

[Hybrid Approach] How Prompt Templates Are Created

Now, this is the core of this article.

'Conversational' and 'Long-Form' prompts.
At first glance, they seem like completely different styles, don't they?

But in reality, the 'prompt templates (long-form prompts)' I share with you are things I completed by repeatedly engaging in steady 'dialogue' with AI.

Here, I will introduce that creation process.

STEP 1: [Explore through dialogue with AI]

Me: 'I want to create the best blog post structure prompt, what elements are needed?'
AI: 'In that case, persona settings, structural instructions, writing style, and SEO keywords come to mind...'

First, it's a brainstorm with AI.
I have it plant many seeds of ideas through dialogue.

STEP 2: [Refinement by the user (me)]

Me: 'I see, the AI's suggestions are comprehensive, but maybe a bit too complex for beginners... Okay, based on my experience running media with over 100 writers, I'll narrow down the truly necessary elements to these!'

I take the ideas gained from the dialogue with AI and polish them using my own experience and knowledge, selecting what to keep and what to discard. This is the part that 'only humans can do'.

STEP 3: [Execute with long-form]

Me: 'Okay, write a "request form" that incorporates all these elements!'

I hand the 'long-form prompt' draft, packed with all the refined elements, to the AI and have it generate the prototype of the template.

STEP 4: [Improve through dialogue]

Me: 'Can this prompt be made easier for beginners to use? Tell me how to improve it.'

I show the completed long-form prompt to the AI again.
And then, while having another 'dialogue', I further increase its level of perfection.

...What do you think?
Did you notice?

"Explore ideas through conversation, and shape them with long-form text."

I am convinced that this hybrid approach is the most creative and efficient way to use AI.

Writing a perfect long-form prompt (a map) right from the start is difficult for anyone.

However, if you start with a fun 'chat' (brainstorming) with AI, anyone can learn to create their own powerful prompts.

Why don't you start by 'brainstorming with AI' too?

Prompt engineering isn't difficult 'studying'.
It starts with a fun 'dialogue' with a smart and obedient partner called AI.

If you are wondering, 'AI, where should I start...?'
First, try throwing a simple question at the AI, the kind where you might think, 'Is it okay to ask this?'

'What do you recommend for lunch today?'
Something that casual is perfectly fine.

That small step will surely be the beginning of a great journey to turn AI into your 'ultimate partner'!
