Free to Use! How to Get Started with Gemini in Google AI Studio and Basic Usage (Latest 3.0 Included)

Haven't you been hearing this a lot lately?

I personally use Gemini in Google AI Studio alongside ChatGPT and Claude, and I really feel that the accuracy has improved significantly.

Moreover, the amazing thing about Google AI Studio is that it is free to use. (As of November 21, 2025)

When it comes to Gemini, there is a paid service called Gemini Advanced, but you can actually use it without subscribing to that.

So, in this article, I have summarized how to get started with Google AI Studio and the basic usage of Gemini for those who haven't used it yet.

How do you get started with Google AI Studio?

To use Gemini for free, first access the following site.

When you access it, you will be asked to log in with your Google account as shown below, so please log in.

The following notes will appear on the screen, so check the privacy policy item at the top and click "Continue." * The other two items are optional

Now you are ready to use Gemini!
You can execute prompts from this black screen.

Basic Usage of Gemini

When you first see it, the screen is black, and you might feel,
"This looks a bit difficult to use..."
but once you get used to it, you won't mind it at all, so don't worry!

Here, I will explain the basic usage assuming you are utilizing Gemini to create blog posts.

1. Open a new chat

To open a new chat, click "Create new prompt" located near the top left of the screen.

2. Select a model

By default, the high-speed Gemini 1.5 Flash model is selected, so you can change it to your preferred model from "Model" in the top right section of the screen.

If you want to use the latest version, you can scroll down to select it!

3. Execute a prompt

Enter your prompt in the box at the bottom center of the screen and click "Run" to execute it.

Additionally, you can change the fidelity to the prompt by adjusting the value of "Temperature" on the right side of the screen.

Temperature is a value that represents the fidelity to the prompt; setting it to 0 produces the most faithful results, while setting it to 2 produces the most creative results.

• When executing a carefully crafted prompt, set the Temperature to "0"

• When asking for brainstorming or similar tasks in a conversational format, set the Temperature to "2"

Try using them differently in this way.

4. Loading files

When you want to load a file and execute a prompt, click the "＋" section at the bottom left of the screen.

A selection will appear, so choose "Upload to Drive".

The Google Drive upload screen will open, so drag the file you want to load.

Once the file is loaded, enter your prompt and execute it by clicking "Run".

5. Copying the output

When you want to copy the content output after executing a prompt, you can copy it using one of the following methods.

▶️ Copy the contents of the code block

If it is output in code format, you can copy it by clicking the red-framed area below.

▶️ Copy the entire chat text

If you want to copy the entire output chat text, please use the following method.

1. Select the three-dot menu in the red box at the top right of the chat.

2. Select "Copy Markdown" to copy the text without breaking its formatting.

6. Saving the chat

In Google AI Studio, chats are not automatically saved when you run a prompt.

Be careful, as closing the browser will cause your chat history to be lost.

※Update: It now saves automatically!

If you want to save a chat, click "Save" at the top right of the screen.

Enter a name for the chat in "prompt name" and click "Save".

It will be saved under "My library" at the top left of the screen; click this to retrieve your chat.

You can also incorporate internet information using tools!

To improve output accuracy, turn on the "Grounding with Google Search" item in the "Tools" menu before running your prompt.

The AI will perform a Google search and generate a response based on information from the internet.

Also, if you only want to load a specific URL, you can enable the URL context option to load information from that URL.

Note: Some versions of Gemini do not support "Grounding with Google Search" or "URL context."

Points to Note When Using Google AI Studio

I also make full use of Google AI Studio for prompt development and article creation, but there are some points to keep in mind when using it.

Be sure to keep the following points in mind.

✅ It is not "completely free" and has usage limits

Although Google AI Studio is free to use, it does not mean you can use it as much as you want for free.

In reality, there are limits placed on the free usage tier.

• Request limits:
  Google AI Studio has limits such as 60 requests per minute (RPM). If you try to generate a large amount of text in a short period, you may hit this limit.

• Potential for future changes:
  While it is currently free to use, it is positioned strictly as a prototyping tool for developers. You should consider the possibility that service details may change, limits may become stricter, or it may become a paid service in the future.

That said, even when I use it all day, I have rarely hit the usage limits of Google AI Studio.

For personal, everyday use, you generally do not need to worry about the limits.

✅ Privacy and security of input data

One of the most important points to be aware of when using the free version is how input data is handled.

In the free version of Google AI Studio, the prompts you enter and the files you upload may be used by Google to improve AI quality.

Avoid entering corporate confidential information, personal data, or unpublished information that you wish to keep secret.

In my case, since I mainly use it to draft articles for platforms like note or my blog that I intend to publish anyway, I use it without worry.

✅ Commercial Use and Copyright of Generated Content

While this is not limited to Google AI Studio, there are some points to keep in mind regarding AI-generated content:

• Commercial use is permitted but at your own risk:
  Under Google's Terms of Service, the copyright of content generated in AI Studio generally belongs to the user, and commercial use is allowed.

• Risk of infringement:
  There is always a possibility that generated text or images could unintentionally infringe upon the copyrights or other rights of third parties.

When using content for business purposes, such as publishing it as an article on the web, it is important to perform fact-checking and verify its originality rather than using the generated content as-is.
