If a Partner Is Incompetent, Cut Ties Immediately
Thank you as always! This is Kaiun-san.
I look forward to working with you today as well.😊
When you are running a business, all sorts of things happen. Today, I am writing about things that new business owners, in particular, should be careful about.
You likely have business partners and outsourced contractors around you, but how do you interact with them?
There may be people you enjoy working with, people you learn from, or people you respect.
Conversely, there may also be people who are difficult to work with, hard to deal with, or unreliable. Among them, if there is someone who is "untrustworthy", please stop dealing with them immediately.
It is extremely dangerous lol
I have also outsourced work to untrustworthy people in the past.
Here are some examples.
🌀 Loose with time
I decided to outsource roof tile repair work to a roofer.
However, on the morning of the construction, the meeting time came and went, and they did not show up.
When I called, they said they had gone to another site early in the morning and were heading here now.
When I asked, the site they were currently at was quite far away. Of course they wouldn't make it in time.
After that, I waited and waited, but they never came.
I had no choice but to cancel over the phone.
🌀 Zero sense of crisis
On the morning of the toilet renovation, the craftsman did not show up. The appointment was for 9:00 AM. 15 minutes late, Kaiun-san's cell phone rang, and they said they were looking for the site but couldn't find it.
I had no choice but to go out of my way to a nearby convenience store that served as a landmark to meet up.
When I asked, they said the car navigation system only showed the area around the site.
They were about to go do the requested construction, yet they set off in the morning relying solely on the car navigation system for the first time; that is completely unplanned and reckless.
Couldn't they have at least Googled it on their computer or smartphone the day before?
🌀 Cannot report, communicate, or consult
I asked a contractor to replace tatami mats, shoji screens, and fusuma sliding doors, but perhaps they were busy, as I received no contact regarding the schedule. When I lost patience and called, they said they would let me know again, so I waited, but there was no contact.
I called again on Saturday morning, but nothing was decided.
I waited another two days after the contractor's holiday ended, but since there was no contact, I decided to refuse their work for life.
How long do you expect me to wait? Hmph!
Below is a summary of each of these troublesome people...
The person who was loose with time must have gotten the schedule for the construction day wrong. They said they would head here after finishing a distant site first, but it was a distance that was impossible in terms of time.
If it was a careless mistake, they should have apologized humbly.
If the craftsman cannot come, Kaiun-san's credibility is also destroyed.
In the end, I rescheduled and had a different contractor come in.
The problem with the person with zero sense of crisis was that they relied too much on the car navigation system; if it were Kaiun-san, I would definitely check the site on Google in advance. You can check it thoroughly with Street View, after all.
Isn't it scary, conversely?
If you search on the car navigation system before leaving in the morning and the address doesn't come up...
They think that if they don't know the location, they can just ask by phone. They don't even have a sense of crisis management.
The person who cannot report, communicate, or consult completely ignored communication. In the meantime, the person in charge even had holidays.
Even if they were off work, they should have been feeling uneasy, thinking, 'I need to contact them.'
If so, why didn't they provide an interim update? Like, 'Please wait a little longer.'
They end up losing business partners over such trivial things. If the president of that company knew about this, they would surely be pathetic.
How did you feel about this?
These are issues of attitude as a business person.
I gave examples of 'incompetent people,' but these three cases are by no means rare occurrences. If you let your guard down, you might be doing the same thing yourself.
So, what did they need?
It is caution, a feeling of consideration for the other party, a sense of responsibility, and what is most lacking is 'gratitude' toward the other party.
Due to the lack of these, they ended up losing important business partners.
If it were a customer they had worked hard to cultivate and sign a contract with, they would surely face them more sincerely. That is because they are grateful to the customer.
But since they are people receiving requests through outsourcing, their sense of crisis is likely thin.
Because you are struggling and doing business on your own, the passion for being grateful to customers becomes greater.
'I can eat because of this contract!'
That is why I believe self-employment is the ultimate life drama.
Since we do business one-on-one with customers, our battlefield is different from that of large corporations.
We are engaged in close-quarters combat, diving right into the heart of the other party.
It is not just an operation of receiving work from above and completing it.
However, this is a different story from internet business.
Business where you cannot see the other person's face is a different matter. What Kaiun-san wrote today is about face-to-face, real-world business.
Now, I will give you the conclusion.
Unfortunately, please do not associate with people like the 'troublemakers' mentioned above.
You will have endless trouble. Because this is how it is.
Please think about it along with me.
People have something like an inherent habit. If that habit is a good one, there is no problem, but people who have habits that negatively affect others are troublesome. That does not change. Also, they have no intention of changing it.
Therefore, these troublemakers also really dislike change.
They will not change their past behavior, so they will continue as they are from now on.
For example, let's say you participated in a very useful seminar.
Suppose you heard a very good story there. And you were inspired, thinking, 'Alright! From today, I will put what I heard into practice,' and a few days passed.
Well, what will happen?
You will gradually return to your original state (laughs).
That is how things are. You cannot sustain consciousness with half-hearted feelings. It is the same as hitting a balloon you have blown air into; it will gradually fall back down.
Since it is convenient for maintaining life for people to stay in their accustomed state, the brain is programmed to return to the original state when one tries to change.
If that is the case, we cannot associate with troublemakers. The more you associate with them, the more trouble you will have, and you will suffer.
The more you suffer, the more your precious ' luck' will disappear.
Out of motherly concern, Kaiun-san has tried to steer these troublemakers in a better direction while associating with them, but it was no use.
It is important to associate with contractors and partners, but please never associate with people who lower your luck.
It is famous that the late Konosuke Matsushita would ask during interviews, 'Are you lucky?'
Since the God of Management was concerned about luck, we should follow his example.
