Cherry Work 3: The Reward
In June, the sun in France is slow to set.
Light filtering through the gaps in the shutters illuminates the jars on the shelf for a long time,
making them sparkle in return.
Lila paces back and forth in front of them.
The events of today still linger in her heart.
The tension in her hands as she pitted the cherries.
The thrill as the syrup turned a deep red.

“Come now, it is time for bed.”
Soeur gently nudges Lila’s back.
“Tomorrow, we shall open just one jar.”
Holding onto only those words, she heads to her room.

The evening sun still stretches across the hallway.
A long day; she helped a lot today.
