Multilingual Observation | Time of "Waiting" / Multilingual Observation | What Lies in Waiting
[Words of Time 4]
Time does not just flow by. Sometimes, people stop within that flow and "wait".
The act of "waiting" has a mysterious duality. It seems as though one is standing still, yet deep within, the heart continues to move. Perhaps one is waiting for someone, something, or even for a change within oneself.
The feeling of "waiting" also differs slightly depending on the language. Is it patience, hope, or perhaps trust?
Today, let's look at the time spent "waiting" through several languages.
Japanese: "Matsu" (Wait) — Embracing the space
"Matsu" is an act of "letting go for a moment." While carrying impatience or anxiety, one trusts the flow of time and surrenders to it. Within the silence, there is a strength to wait with belief, rather than resignation.
English: Wait — A time of patience and control
"Wait" is linked to "patient" and "delay." "Be patient" is a word of self-restraint to align with external time.
Perhaps "waiting" is a sense of accepting time as something that "cannot be controlled."
French: Attendre — Holding the resonance of expectation
"Attendre" means not only "to wait" but also "to expect." "Waiting" is an act that includes emotions toward the future.
Perhaps "waiting" is not passive, but a rich time of "feeling what has not yet arrived."
Arabic: انتظار (intiẓār) — An act of trust and surrender
"انتظار" includes the meaning of "waiting quietly" for God's will or destiny. It is not a sign of helplessness, but an expression of trust.
Perhaps the act of "waiting" itself is an extension of prayer.
The act of "waiting" is not just passing time. It is accepting the present while believing in the future, and finding "meaning" within a time when one cannot move.
Time that seems to be standing still is actually flowing continuously. It is as if an invisible force is flowing quietly within it.
Today, I leave you with a question once again.
What are you "waiting" for right now?
