Episode 106 Returning to Home Base.
There is a term in the retail industry called "shelf replacement."
Best-selling items in supermarkets change significantly depending on the season.
In summer, consumers tend to prefer refreshing or spicy items, while in winter, they prefer hot items that warm the body; therefore, products on display shelves are reviewed according to the season to encourage customers to make purchases.
Removing poor-selling products from shelves and replacing them with others is done on a daily basis, but it is customary to conduct a major shelf review twice a year, in early spring and early autumn... this is what is called "shelf replacement."
Food manufacturers treat this period as a major sales battle, playing "Splatoon," so to speak.
The stage is the display shelf of each retailer... if you win on the stage, you get a bonus multiplied by the number of stores.
If you win at a major mass retailer, it's possible to get a 100x multiplier.
Food manufacturers launch new products and polish existing ones in preparation for this sales battle.
They make an effort to paint the shelves with their own products using every possible weapon, and as a result of this fierce battle, the "shelf allocation," which becomes the base for sales over the following six months, is decided.
That is why the sales of food manufacturers can change significantly every six months.
It is strong to have "staples" that are guaranteed to sell even here... if you have a flagship product that gets put on the shelf without much effort, you can count on a base for your sales.
Now, my job after moving to the factory office was in the department that handles orders.
My job was to receive orders from customers, create shipping and sales slips, and present the production quantities required to meet those orders to the factory.
This was quite an analog department, and since the sales team would play "Splatoon" every six months and the map of influence would change drastically, past data was difficult to use.
On top of that, there were new products... the weapons in hand, meaning the product lineups of both our company and other companies, were completely different from last year.
Well,in a situation like this, I, who am logical, could not possibly operate on "gut feeling"...
Having returned to my "home ground" of working with physical goods, I would end up taking on the task of modernizing the department.
I don't know the real reason why they put me in that department, but with thisenvironmental reset, my work would once again head in a "lucky" direction.
